Garrett VLF/TR Deepseeker

Just picked this unit. I have a Garrett Grounhog as well. When you power up the Deepseeker, the tone remains steasy and cannot be reset. Any ideas on where to begin troubleshooting? Thanks in advance.

Possibly an open cct in the coil or lead plug n socket . This will make it impossible for the threshold to be restet to null.
Could be a number of problems but check the plug and socket pins and wire connections.

Good advice. I disconnected the coil but you are saying to check the pins on the control side (the jack)?

I have a Coin Hunter VLF/TR Deep Seeker (controls on side, push button on handle) and am just learning how to use it. I thought I had the same problem (and I still might) but I can get it to "shut-up" by pressing the handle button and turning the VLF Ground Control clockwise (decrease).

Two questions: Is there a Volume Control on these machines? When the tone is on (or it alerts) the volume is uncomfortably loud - you can hear it in the house when I am outside... (and forget it inside the house - wow!)

Will my Coin Hunter (the 1976-1977 model, not the "New & Improved" ADS model) be able to locate small gold nuggets? Since it is not a Groundhog model (15kHz) but the 5.5kHz Coin Hunter model?

I found this on another forum:

Here is a list of items that certain frequency's respond best to certain metal. This information comes from George Payne, the engineer that gave us all the ground canceling, target ID'ing, discriminating detectors that everyone bases their designs on today.

Best frequency to use:
US Dime = 2.7 KHz
Gold Coins & other US Coins = below 10 KHz.
Us Nickel & gold Jewelry = 16.5 KHz
Gold Nuggets = above 20 KHz

Any advice is appreciated.

I am saying to check the continuity of the coils from the plug into the coil and to make sure there is not a problem with the control box coil socket connections.
I have known coil plug pins male or female to push back into the plug.
Also if the retune push button switch is not working this can cause the threshold to not reset to zero.
I assume your batteries are good.

Is this your machine?

These are the easy things to check. Otherwise you may have to send it off to garrett.

I checked continuity on the the push button switch. It is good in both positions (ground cancel and discriminate). For the coil, I have continuity on pins 2 & 3. Pin 1 has continuity to ground (or the connector). Pin 4 is does not have continuity to anything. Not sure if these are the correct readings for the coil (deepseeker x co-planar coil). Two questions:

1. With the coil disconnected, shouldn't I still be able to ground cancel?

2. If the batteries are weak, will this prevent you from perfroming a ground cancel? As I recall, the batteries did register in the acceptable range.

3. Is there a schematic available for this unit?

4. Does this unit require all six 9 volt batteries or is this a 3 and 3 configuration?

Thanks

Jeff

I have the Master Hunter ADS VLF/TR Deepseeker. Not sure how many variations of this unit exist.
