It's not a bad little machine. As I recall I tested one a kazillion years ago. It does a fair job at finding goodies.

Ya that is the right picture.

I bought it. The battery box is not missing,,matter of a fact,,, the batteries in it are full charged. It looks like,, just out of the box, brand new..
The guy ,,,as he was handing it to me was saying " I dont know what happened to the battery box". Im looking at it,, and can tell nothing is missing.
Gave him 20$ and,,,,, on the way down the road ,,,reached over,,,, and turned it on.

On further inspection at home. Seems there is something wrong,,maybe the coil is bad. Getting allot of chatter at times. I turned the depth down, guessing that is the sensitivity also. Does not seem to help. Its a crossfire coil.

Thinking of changing the batteries even though they show full charged.

It will pick up a coin without chatter ,,and then for no apparent reason ,,start going craxy. If I run it back over the coin it will straighten out. ?????? any ideas???

Might be worth sending it in to Garrett for a once-over. I don't know the value, but a quick search showed one that sold on Feebay for just over $150, so you could put a few $ in it & still come out ahead. Or, you might learn it's too costly to repair before you invest much time & $ in it trying to locate the problem. Hope you can get it straightened-out!

Update,,,lol. I replaced the batteries, went out back and detected for 10 minutes or so without a problem. I dont understand why but it seems to be working fine now.
I read the manual and it seems when you turn this machine on,,,it auto ground balances right then. The first time I turned it on,, I was over my paved driveway and then went to grass,,it chattered badly. This time I turned it on over the grass and it worked fine.
Im not sure if this was the problem but it works now , that is all that matters.
Thanks for the help.

Flash 5153 if when you turn the detector on keep the touchpad pushed in for ten seconds and the detector will retune itself back to factory settings and you should be good to go then. You wont have to do that but one time and will turn on with a push of the pad and work fine then..Markmac

i have this unit. bought at auction long ago. i too thought the battery wires were missing.

had it a couple yrs.got it for 15 dollars.figured the coil was worth that. somehow i never really looked inside.

when i saw the battery contact buttons i realized slide in batteries. not wires.

tryed the 2 4 pax off my old fisher 1260 bingo it works great.

seem like a lot of good features for a cheap old machine. i like the fact u can turn on or off any of the 17 segments

havent played w it much yet...so well see
