GARRETT SEA HUNTER

supershaw

New member
Hi ,.....Anyone out there got a Garrett sea hunter, just bought one not delivered yet.
Got any tips for me ? also are there any coils i can retro fit to improve depth etc.

I,m in Spain so can only detect on the beach....Thanks

I can't help you with the tips part as I have an Infinium LS. I had also looked at the Sea Hunter as it too utilizes 96 frequencies like the Infinium but I choose the LS.

I do know that you can get a 10x14" coil for the hunter. Go here and then scroll to the bottom. You'll see it there. $110.95 for it which seems fair to me.

Hi Fellow Hunter,

Take an "on line" step over to the Finds Forum Garrett Infinium Classroom and you will see a recent post comparing the Infinium and the Sea Hunter with an excellent description of strengths and shortcomings of them both.

Good Luck with your fine new machine,

Cupajo

I used the Garrett Mark IIs my 1st 2 seasons of water hunting. The 8" coil is the best IN THE WATER. The 10X14" is only good for wetsanding and hard to pinpoint with, as compared to the 8". I would not buy one, if I were you, it's WAY overrated. Be sure to coat the 8" coil with Loctite Marine Epoxy, as there is no coil cover available and it will split out and false, if you don't do it. Run 0 Discrimination/Elimination, Standard Trash Elimination and barely audible Threshold/Volume. That is the ONLY way to run the unit to find gold. Dig it all. I would NOT recommend hip mounting it either. Over or under the cuff, but Anderson makes a nice Straight shaft, also available from Kellyco. Best of luck to ya mate.
Here is an archive photo using the Mark II in the surf.

No worries OUTATIME! I was a bit more obsessive compulsive and perhaps not as wise then, but every now and again, a little beating is good fer a scallywag, eh mate? The spoils come to those who take their beating occationally!

GH your CRAZY!!!! Unbelievable surf your in!!! Love the photo. Were you able to find something that day???

GH,

I tip my coil to you. That's stinking devotion at it's finest. I seriously mean it. :beers:

Gulf Hunter,

That is a really cool photograph. Makes me want to jump in there with you. It is easy to see that you don't take "no" for an answer too easily.

That photo says a lot about the durability of the machine! Those are some interesting comments about the pirate using it!

A careful look at the surf in the background and you can see that the rollers are losing most of their steam by breaking not too far away from where GH is hunting.

It's obvious to me the pirate knows his hunting grounds and is having a ball where many might refuse to get their feet wet.

Bang on the money, Cupajo! GH is an experienced surf pirate and knows his way around the hunting grounds, no doubt about it. There are much worse conditions that are still huntable if you have the experience. GH is right in the pocket for the area that targets would accumulate in during those conditions, smart hunter.
Stronger conditions can increase the chance of rip tides and those can kill you but even still this is a huntable scenario if you use proper caution but as they say in Bermuda 'Common Sense is a Gift'.

Here's a pic of tough surf conditions for those who like flat water.

This is November in Bermuda and the water temp was in the 60's, hence the wet suit. A gale had blown through in the days prior to this so the surf was up. I couldn't go deeper than chest deep safely. Rip tides started to open up half way through the hunt so I retreated to hip deep waters.

This is right after Hurricane Kyle hit, some reasonable hunting but anything deeper than waist deep was unsafe.

This is in the midst of a CAT 1 hurricane where I was helping some friends save their boat but I sure wouldn't have hunted in these conditions.

Sometimes you just have to push the envelope a little if you're going to get the good stuff. I still won't hunt in the dark of night with bull sharks bumping up against me, I leave that to GH.:poke:

Kewl,

Hey bdahunter,

I saw a nature special the other evening that told of the bull sharks killing more people than all other sharks combined!!!

They are also the only ocean shark that can live comfortably in fresh water streams.

When I was a teen at Matagorda Bay in Texas, I used to wade for flounder at night with a gig (spear with two prongs) and a Coleman lantern. One hint of a shadow at the edge of the light was enough to get me out of the water!

Nice post! Great photos!

It makes sense too because they have found they have the highest levels of testosterone than any other shark, hence their nature is very aggressive.
