garrett propointer or vibraprobe for a good pinpointer?

If you want a waterproof one then go with the vibraprobe. Not sure of the other if any differences between the two. The GPP can be moded to be waterproof, but you might as well get a vibraprobe if you want waterproof. HH and GL

I don't know anything about the vibra-probe, But i have had two garrett pro-pointers and in my opinion, they are junk. The way they work i like. The fact is that they have a terrible flaw, "after a little use they will beep, beep, beep, beep, beep, beep, beep on any thing you touch them against. Now there are people that will say they had no problems with their pro-pointer, and that is great for them, i wish i could say the same.. But i have read where a lot of folks has the same problems i described. Just saying.....

Junk, is a very strong word to use about the Garrett. I understand it's your opinion. If you take a poll, the GPP will come out a big winner. If you send it back, Garrett will make you happy. There are reasons why they are so popular and most detectorists use them.

Of the FEW GPP I've heard of that had problems I found out that the users where prying with them (roots or whatever) so, in that,
I have one,
My Brother has one,
My co-working has two,
and none of us has ever had a problem with the first one!
And in any topic that was ever started here about Pinpointers the Garrett is always the clear winner, always! without exception!

Just keep in mind that's its a piece of sensitive electronic equipment that CAN be destroyed! but of the total numbers of them out there, very few have problems with them.

everyone Ive owned has been eratic,i send them in and the replaced ones end up doing the same

Having owned both, the GPP is much better except it is not waterproof if you hunt in the water. I have not had any problems with mine. If you don't need a pinpointer right away, I would wait for White's to introduce theirs.

I had to send mine back to Garrett under warranty. They took care of the problem immediately. I did purchase a second one while mine was being repaired as I REFUSE to Detect without a Pro Pointer. As stated they are a sensitive piece of equipment. Dropping, prying, etc can and will cause problems. Treat them well and they will return the favor.

I have had three different brands of pin pointers (including a PI one) and always go back to my Garrett. It is clearly the best, for me, for finding the targets once I have honed it on it with my detector.
Please note that, as mentioned above, it is a complex piece of equipment = a real metal detector in a cigar-sized tool. I, too, have had mine start beeping, but no problem - I just turn it off and then back on again and that usually resolves the problem. If it doesn't......
The Garrett PP has some great features and you may want to try this in order to get it to work the way you want.

*** On start up, the GPP takes a reading and adjusts its sensitivity automatically. You can use this to your advantage. So if you want it to be a little less sensitive, you can start up the GPP with the tool a few inches away from a nickel, for example. You will have to experiment with the coin (nickel, dime, penny, etc.) along with the distance from the pointer you place it upon startup. The closer to the pointer = the more de-sensitized it will be. Meaning that you will have to have the pointer closer to the/any target for it to beep.
Occasionally when mine beeps more than I would like (most likely caused by EMI or my detector or cell phone or a combination), I use this method to slightly de-sensitize it. Problem solved.
I hope this helps.

The Garrett Pro Pointer is the best one out there. IMO I have had one for three seasons. And it is still going strong. I have dug over 7000 coins with it.

I use the Garrett pinpointer and I have the same problems as the other guys but Garrett will replace them. The best pinpointer I have ever used is the Sun-Ray X-1 on my E-Trac. I have not had any problems with the Minelab pinpointer but have not used it much. You can turn off the Garrett and stick it in the dirt and turn it back on while in the dirt and it does fine for awhile but you should not have to do that. I did hear about the Whites pinpointer and it sounds promising. HH :minelab::fisher::teknetics::shrug:

I have not used the vibraprope but have held one. The Garrett is much more ergonomically sized being almost 4" shorter and I'm not sure if the vibraprope has the desensitizing feature the propointer has which can be very handy with dirt colored small targets and clad coins. I think the vibraprope utilizes a mercury switch which sounds like a pain if it turned off while you were digging if you were to lay it down a little up hill. Garrett refurbished my first pointer for the cost of shipping after probably 10,000 cycles and that pointer is now my backup as I won't be without one.

Best value at this time , hands down.

Must be Winter...folks be rattling on about pinpointers!
Mud

It's snowin here---it don't snow in the desert :(

Woke up to 4 inches of snow here in Albuquerque this morning! And it's still coming down! Glad I went out yesterday!

As to the pinpointer issue, I have both - ProPointer for dry conditions, VibraProbe for wet.

I have both (and others).
I like the Garrett ProPointer.
Like the size and it drops in a opening in my leather pouch for a nice fit.
The openings for the sound, I took a little gob of black RTV and worked it in the opening and filled it flushed. Not as nosiy now. And it just happens not long after doing that, I had dropped it in a creek when the sun was going down and it took me a little time finding it. It's work well for the years I've used it.
If I need added depth, I just do the penny trick thing to it.

Yes Sir Steve O junk is a strong word. But just because a company may be a great company doesn't mean everything they build is a great product. To me the pro-pointer needs to be re-evaluated. It is in most perspectives a great product but it does have a terrible flaw, and yes garrett replaced my first pro-pointer without question, but the one they replaced it with had the same flaw. Batting 100% with me, in the wrong direction. just saying.... OH and by the way i treat all my equipment with kid gloves, something i learned many decades ago, anything i got i had to work for. And i learned to take care of it.

I don't care what pinpointer you use but, if your using it for digging, prying or banging the plug to find your target, then your gonna have a problem with it down the road. These things are for locating your target, not the above mentioned.Take care of your equipment and it will take care of you, abuse it and you'll be calling it junk in no time and then you'll be looking for another and when you abuse that one, you'll be searching for another and so on.By the way I use a GPP and love it.

I've got two Garretts and when one got a bit quirky, it straightened up with a new battery. Then a bit later it got quirky again. Then I put a quarter in the cap to put more pressure on the battery and problem solved. Been working fine ever since.

Thank you richbat for that. I feel you are directing it toward my opinionated response to the OP. And you might want to read my above post about, i take care of my equipment. I don't use it to dig, pry or bang. I think the OP post is getting a little sidetracked and should be concentrated back to it's original purpose.
