Garrett ProPointer gave me a problem on my first search with it.

After one hour the speaker volume dropped way down to barely audible. Thought the battery was going, vibe still worked. When I got back to the car I noticed the two speaker slits were packed solid with dirt. When I got home I cleaned them out and the volume was good again. I covered the slits with heavy cloth, glued in place, hope it works. Poor speaker slit design, otherwise is good. Found only one wheat penny and a bunch of shotgun shells in the woods.

I don't care for that speaker on the Pro Pointer either (that's about the only thing about that little probe I don't like).----From the "get go", I cut a circle useing black Gaffers tape large enough to cover the speaker hole.---This tape looks great on the black probe, blocks the sound, keeps dirt out & when (if) you take the tape off, there's is no residue mess on the pinpointer to have to deal with (like with some other tapes).----Speakeing for myself, I wish Garrett would have made that pinpointer with just the vibrateing feature.---I can't hear the speaker tone anyway with my headphones on--close bystanders can though (if the speaker isn't covered). -----------Del

Sometimes i can't hear it so good and discover my hand is over the speaker I can't hear so good anyway, glad it vibrates. That thing is great, saves time and the holes are smaller. I almost like that little gem more than my metal detector.

I use several wraps of 3M Electrial tape over my speaker. When it needs it again I just re do it. No issues and have hunted in mud like you woul not believe, Beale.

Haven't found the speaker hole prone to filling up with dirt myself, but I do want to cover it with Shoe Goo to prevent any moisture or dirt getting in at all if I drop it in water or something. That's about the only place it could, and if you put a rubber O-ring under the battery screw on cap I bet the thing would be completely waterproof down a few feet anyway. Once the warranty runs out in two years I'll seal the speaker hole with the rubber cement (Shoe Goo is the best of all of them), but until then I may cover it with tape like you guys. Not to drop the audio like some people complain is too loud. I don't find it loud even when not wearing headphones and yet I can still hear it with my headphones on. I can find targets by vibration alone but I prefer also hearing it like I can because I think I can get a little more information about target location that way, for me anyway.

Also, if you leave the ProPointer turned on too long it will start to false, like after a minute or two. No big deal, and it's a handy way to remember you left it on by mistake. If you just press the on/off button down slightly without clicking it the unit will come on, which I find works well to not have to remember to turn it on. Once you let go and lay it on the ground or back into the holster it's automaticly turned off since you didn't click the button. I bet that is also less wear and tear on the switch. I'll only click it on if super or de-tuning.

Just bought the ProPointer and really don't have any complaints. I can hear the tone with my headphones on and I try and keep the slits up toward me or facing away from hole wall as much as possible. If I put my thumb over the slits to keep the dirt out and don't apply a lot of pressure I can still hear the tone. The vibration on mine is really strong. Seems to pick up signals well.

Love my Propointer and I agree with taping the speaker hole, which not only muffles the screech, but also makes it virtually waterproof. However,on my last few trips the on/off ratchet switch has hung (won't stay on/off without some fiddling).Still it has been the best pinpointer that I have used to date, but will probably have to be sent in while it's still under warranty.(6 months old).Unfortunately there are no Garrett dealers in my area and this one had to be purchased on-line.And yes,I'm terribly hard on equipment!
