Garrett Pro-Pointer vs. DetectorPro Pistol Probe?

Erik in NJ

New member
Anyone have any opinions on which is the better pinpointer? I haven't seen either in person and am not aware of the various features of each. Have been using a VibraProbe for the past 8 years.

Got the Pro-Pointer about a month ago and have to say I like it better than my old Vibra-Probe. Pro-Pointer does detect at around 1 1/2" so at least you know you are getting close, unless of course it is a larger item it will pick up a bit farther away. Nice thing is it has audible and vibration, but you cannot turn the audio off, but a piece of electrical tape over the small speaker will take care of that if you don't want everyone else to be alerted to your finds. I find that it works really great in the tot lots and the parks. I usually just run the Pro-Pointer around the area where I got the signal with my detector and if it is close to the top the pinpointer picks it up and no need to dig a plug, just pop it out of there. Hope that helps, but I know nothing about the pistol probe other than if I seen someone in the park with a gun looking device I might have second thoughts and maybe be making a call to you know who.

I just ordered both a Pistol Probe(PI) and a XT-70 on Friday. I am convinced it is MUCH deeper than the Garrett Pro-Pointer(VLF, 12 kHz).

I own the pistol probe. It is very deep almost too deep I know sounds crazy but hear me out. If you have clean ground only one target in the hole, you cannot beat it it will go at least 4 inches on a dime. But if there is alot of junk around your target it will pick all of it up....Old cellar hole with lots of nails around and junk maybe a problem ? In the corn field or pretty clean ground you cannot beat that probe it is so strong it truly is Amazing.
I like it.

Hi Erik. Can't compare as I don't have them side by side to compare. I did get myself the Garrett Pro-Pointer and so far I like it. Not that sensitive as far as dimes go, but the bigger stuff seems to come in strong and what I really like is that not only does the tip of the probe pick up your target, the whole length of the shaft does as well at 360 degrees.

I recently got the Garrett pro pointer and I am extremely happy with it and that light on it , lights up the inside of a dig hole very well at night .Holster holds the probe very well also . A very well designed and manufactured product .Does not look like a gun or anything threatening at all . It works well and is worth the money .

Aggree i really like mine.

We carry both of them and I like them both. I like the water resistant idea, also the led light is excellent for evening hunting etc. and like the fact that the signal gets stronger as you get closer.

Just got the 12/08 issue of Lost Treasure and on pages 24-26 there is a review of Garrett's Pro-Pointer.
