Garrett Pro Pointer - False Signals with Slighest Pressure

Garrett Pro Pointer - False Signals...

Finally figured out what was going on after digging countless "False" mystery objects while retrieving.

I thought it must be "halo" or minerals in the hole making the Garrett Pro Pointer signal but it seems there is something wrong with it.

The slightest pressure on the pointer makes it signal. In a hole move the pointer around roots or pushing it down into the bottom... Oh it's just out of sight....Or is it???

My experience has been either it is OR the Garrett Pro Pointer just doesn't like its nose pushed into the dirt... It throws a signal putting any pressure on its tip in the hole.

Just saw another post of a guy having the same problem and everyone was telling him it was minerals in the ground. He was pleading that it was suffering from the same issue mine is but it seemed to be falling on deaf ears.

I purchased this new around Christmas 2013. Here in Michigan the ground has been frozen til a couple weeks ago. This pointer really hasn't seen any use yet and here it is...

I considered Garretts Pro Pointer to be the best on the market. It looked like they were the lucky company that just got it right - first. Simple design - one button.... I already traded in my AT-Pro for a CTX-3030 and never looked back. I acutally did what I'm looking for now and can't believe the box of bottle caps I had collected prior to the CTX.

I received a brand new Minelab Pinpointer in the bundle with my CTX. I was going to sell it thinking how could you beat the Garrett Pro Pointer...I mean what more is there to want... W...E....L.....L... When you are in the field that last thing you what screwing with you is your equipment. Many times you are digging weak signals as it is and no one needs a point pointer falseing on the dig. I consider the dig a timed event. The less people see me digging, I believe the better. I want to pinpoint with the detector and have the handheld pointer to help me quickly execute the recovery - nice, neat plug back in place...done.

I guess I'll get with Garrett about their pinpointer and crack the seal on the new Minelab Pro Pointer... It looks cheap compared to the Garrett but hey - looks may be deceiving....

That is kind of a common thing with the Garretts. Mine does the same thing when you push on the tip. Although its not like just setting it on the tip in the hole makes it go off but rather you have to push on it some. What I have been doing is taking my knife and kind of loosening up the soil in the hole and then pushing it into the dirt or push it in and then back off on the pressure once its in as deep as I think it should be. It is kind of annoying but once you get used to it, it doesnt really bother me.

Gotcha Bens...

I just did some searching and came to that conclusion. Bummer... Sounds like some have had good results with repair (mod?) when sent back to Garrett. I feel its normal to "push" the probe into the hole with some firmness to gain a quick fix if on the edge of pointer detection. It is what it is, but come on manufactures! A pin pointer should be a pretty simple conception! I'd pay $200 for one that would work as it should and last long enough to brag about it.... =-)

Phooy.... lol

I,ve noticed that my "pro pointer" when left on for more that a minute or so will begin to "chatter" like a monkey that has not had a bannana for a month. What a piece of crap that I spent big money on! I wish I would have spent that money on something that worked!

Mine works okay, the only beef I have is about when I turn it on. I must press the button firmly and then let go. If I rush it or take too long, it turns back off.

Sorry all, did not mean to vent my frustration about the pro pointer I got. I know the folks at Garrett will make it right and all will be well. Just was a little "ticked off" that day and went in the wrong direction with my anger. Sorry again for my post. Good luck to all and hoping that gold and silver is under your coil soon...

I have the exact same problem with mine. It is less than a year old and has been on less than 5 hunts.
any pressure on the tip sets it off. It also randomly just starts beeping without motion or near anything. It needs
to be turned off to stop it.
I was just bragging about it to my brother in law on the last hunt. :-(

I can see the pressure thing as that would change the distance between the "coil and the core" or what would be the "transmitter to reciever" distance. Now I am starting to wonder if my/your issue has something to do with as we take these out to use them and they get out in the sun if there isn't a bit of expansion from the heat. This would change the distance of the components as different materials would expand at different rates. Just a thought, not an expert by any means on this stuff.........besides when I think too much it makes my head hurt............

Mine Toots if you press on the end hard, i think its normal. Also these suckers get pretty erattic a day or two before the battery dies. Mine was doing some weird stuff then two hunts later i got the change battery beep, with a fresh battery all problems resolved.

Have had several and they will do that if I press to firmly sideways. Have put a cap on the end of my newest one and it seems to have helped. It just has only an 1" of depth with it. I have put an item that a friend gave me to tune it when you press down on the end. A little circuit board with a rubber button that actives it when pressed. Gives me an extra half inch. Wondering if Garrett can adjust these to get a little more depth? I have tried the new competitors one that is out and it is deeper but don't like the signal is just on tip and the press button and hold to turn it off and on.

If they made it work too deep it would not be much of a pinpointer IMHO, I think its good the way it is i just wish it was 100% waterproof out of the box.

I have used my pro- pointer for approx 1000 hunts , results - flawless . Maybe some of the pro pointers have gremlins but I can say with %100% honesty it has been a good workhorse - no problems apart from having to press the switch a second time because the first press did not work
for what ever reason , but not a common occurrence. I rate the pro pointer 8.5 out of ten on performance , I rate it 10 out of ten on sheer build quality- very solid build quality. The battery life is very pleasing too- last ages. The scraper blade useful at times too. How can they improve it , well maybe a bit more depth and I would rate it 10 out of ten.......They did a good job designing this cult pointer - well done garrett....

This is why I think the Garrett pro pointer has a major problem. When you watch this video look how the wires roll back on the circuit board and once it does that ....it's all over. I think it was planned this way from the manufacturer. I sent mine back 2x once after a month I had it and again now. Never even used it that much. I'm done

I talked to Garrett today about Pin Pointer, Used it three time since Christmas, she try a new battery, if that don't fix it send it back.

When they work or I should say if they last !!! they work great. I don't think I would buy another one after seeing how they are put together. !

Garrett told me to day, try new battery, if still does it and still under two year warranty they will fix it

I'm new to this forum and am hoping for help from fellow Garrett owners . I own a GTP 1350. The problem i have is it false signals over depressions or voids along the edge of a sidewalk where it meets the yard. It will sound off as if there was a target there when there is not. I have read in some forums that there is an updated mineral or ground balance chip for these machines, the newer ones have thses updated chips in them at time of manufacturing. Some have said this will help eliminate this falsing. I contacted Garrett and spoke to sue. She stated that all detectors do this, it would be as if you lifted your coil off the ground, and that the chip was intended for highly mineralized states where black sand or magnetite is found, and that this chip would not cure my complaint. Has anyone else run into this and if so is there a cure for what i see as a problem and they say all detectors do this, which i know is not the case. Please help,!!!!!!
