Garrett pro pointer AT users

I think because it is a holiday weekend many users are busy........... You will get some answers ... be patient.

I have not yet heard any ill conversation about the new one...so I am making an assumption it operates the same as the old model..

Far as i can tell the number one complaint with their original PPer is falsing. Hopefully Garrett worked on that issue with their new PPers.

My new Garrett PPer worked great the first year with only a rare false now and then mostly during hot weather.

Second year, the falsing got progressively worse towards the end of the season to the point i started looking at other PPers but it was still useable.

Third year, the falsing got so bad, it was unuseable. Just looking at it caused it to false. Its retired somewhere now.
To be fair though, i put a lot of miles on that PPer especially that first year.

The verdict on whether their new PPers are an improvement might not be known for another year or two.
Picked up a TRX early last year, so far its holding up with basically no falsing.

I have had the old one for 4 years it goes a little crazy once in awhile but all I have to do is shut it off and turn it back on and it works great . Now I did buy a new Orange one last week cause I wanted a backup for my sons to use when they detect with me and I have only used it out in the field once so far . It did work great with no falseing but only time will tell how much better it works . They have great depth and the new ones have 6 modes .Three modes are vibrate only and three are sound and Vibrate together and there is three sensitivity settings for both ways ... It gets so deep on the max setting it's not very good when looking for a item in the hole on max you have to down mode to default setting medium or to low setting or you pick up the targets to far away to find them easy but maximum is good for targets to deep for the other two depths , I only had to switch to max one time the day I was out . Takes a little while to figure out all the mode stuff .

After five years with my original one, I believe the on/off button may be starting to go out. Some times it takes three or four pushes to get it to fire up. Other then that, I have not had any falsing issues with mine. I also have another one as a backup in case this one does go on the blink. HH jim tn

I've put a lot of miles on mine. And I keep back-ups just in case something happens to one of them. When one starts to falsing and acting up it's usually due to moister getting into the electronics. I discovered that if you take off the battery cap off and pull the rubber boot off the power switch and let it air out for a few days it will cure the problem. A faster way is to use a hair dryer on low heat and force air through the battery compartment and out the switch hole for a few minutes. Whatever you do, never ever take one apart. I got bored and did just that to take a peek to see what's inside and now its on it's way to Garret for repairs. Taking it apart was easy, but trying to put it back together again is near impossible. YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED!

Oh yeah, I'll have new orange one in a few days.

I love mine and use it for 3 years and I have other one for my back up! Few times that mine turn crazy or weird then I replace for new battery then it work find! New battery! Weak battery hurt my hunting time and I always have one new battery in my shirt pocket!

I bought one almost two years ago and have sent it back to Garrett twice - but each time it was my own fault! Saw a vid on youtube about how to make a regular Garrett PP more sensitive by "offset tuning". Well, I succeeded in making the PP more sensitive, but getting it back together - and lining up the LED light correctly - and getting the lead wires out of the way of the circuitboard all at the same time proved a bit too involved for me - ended up having the more sensitive PP without LED function. Sent it back to Garrett with a note explaining what I did - and they repaired it no questions asked! Even after I offered to pay a "processing fee" they have been more than helpful - I won't do it again and have the ProPointer AT (Carrot) which is MUCH more sensitive and stable at the same time.

Now my "original" PP sits as a backup - can't quite justify selling it yet...

Have owned the Carrot for about 2 months now and it has seen a couple of soggy hunts. Water gets into the speaker compartment but if you shake it off you have perfect sound quality unlike the older PP. In the default setting you can expect about 20% more sensitivity on a coin-sized object...and there is a higher setting beyond that. It can be adjusted to beep and vibrate, or run in a silent vibratory mode - but 99% of the time most will use it exactly the same way as the old one.

The "beeps" are slightly lower frequency which allows a greater number of people to hear it more clearly. So far so good as far as falsing goes - can't recall a time where this was an issue!
