Garrett Pinpointer VS Automax?

Can anyone tell me what the main difference is between the Garrett Pin-pointer that everyone is talking about and the Automax? I got the Automax pin-pointer free from KellyCo last year when I bought my Ace. Is it any good?

Got the same freebie with my 2500 and it worked OK. Don't know if it's the same for all but mine would not work in cold weather and was basically a pain in the rear. Went with the sunray probe that mounts right to the machine. Have herd allot of good things about Garrett's pro-pointer but have not used one. GL

"You get what you pay for" We have all heard that all our lives.
I am not going to say the Automax does not work and I am sure it is a nice little freebie, but the pro-pointer is great, it is not bulky and rides fine on my belt while I'm out detecting and you have an excellent company to back it up.

I guess that Automax is better than nothin'. I've had 'em before(before Garrett introduced the Propointer)and they're okay. The Garrett Propointer is vastly superior to the Automax. It's a sleeker more compact and rugged design. Virtually indestructable and more sensitive than Automax. Automax will either beep or not(or vibrate if selected), while the Propointer will begin to beep and vibrate slowly as you near a target. Then the beeping will increase and get faster as you near the target until you touch the target, then it wil beep steadily. So, in my opinion, as far as metal detecting pinpointers go, on a scale of one to ten with one being worst and ten being best, I would rate the Garrett Propointer a ten and the Automax a three or maybe a weak four.:biggrin:Happy Hunting!:)

Big thanks to everyone for telling it like it is. I do appreciate it. I will use the Automax (until I get my new pro-pointer). Then I will try selling the Automax on ebay. It certainly sounds like the Pro-pointer is the only way to go.

As you've probably learned from using the Automax, you have to manually set the threshold every time you turn it on. With the Automax, I found it too long as it was always getting in the way hanging off of my belt. My other disappointment was that you had to almost be touching the metal find before it would alert, no matter how finely I set the threshold.

I haven't used the Garrett Probe, but I have the VibraProbe 580. I picked the 580 as it is waterproof, no external switches, vibrates its alerts (no audio alert - personal preference only), detects off of the point only (not the sides as others do - personal preference only), and since it uses Pulse Induction, it works great in high mineral areas/salt water. On typical coin sized targets, it will alert around 2" or more, from the find.

Garrett Infinium on order!

I have found, and I could be mistaken, but when compaines give away pinpointers it's usually because
they are not much good to begin with. The fisher pinpointer is a case in point. Fisher pinpointer is not worth much and most
people I have talked to tell me its junk. Only a few have told me they like the pinpointer, but over all its a thumbs down
on Fisher. Every now and then you see the Fisher ppinpointers being given away with the purchase of one of their
metal detectors. Just my opinion. Could be they are coming out with a new model of pinpointer too.

Spend the money and get Propointer by Garrett. It gets more depth too.

I've got a automax V2 that I got for $40 when I bought the 250. It is a good
pinpointer as far as function. I've used mine for over three years and have
not had any trouble. I actually like it quite a bit, as I prefer an adjustable sens,
and it detects plenty far enough for pinpoint work.
The only real drawback to it is the bulky case and sensor. Also you can't abuse
it much. You drive a car over one, and it will be toast. :( Heck, just sitting on one
wrong might break it.
But should be no problem as long as you don't abuse it.
I would not waste any money on other pinpointers as long as that one is working.
Like I say, they work just fine for the job at hand.
I'm gonna keep running mine till it flakes out, and then I'll get a new one.
The automax is not a piece of junk like say using a harbor freight stud checker...
Heck, they sell for pretty good money at the normal non sale prices.

I just watched a Youtube video about this.

Go with the Garrett!!

i got a free automax awhile back (their is a reason why they give them away) wasn't impressed, threw it in the garbage cuz i would have felt bad selling it. bought a Pro Pointer, little pricey but worth every penny. won't go hunting with out it.
