Garrett P.B Fortune Hunter back in action!

Well today I went to my parents house after visiting my brother in NC this week. He told me I could use his old detector from when we used it in high school. He told me it was still in his closet at our parents house! What? I didnt know that.

So I told my dad that he said I could use it and just happens to be that he (dad) had a brand new instruction manual sent to him from Garrett that he ordered few weeks ago for it. He was kinda excited to see me back out detecting again and thought he would fire up the old Fortune Hunter.

So I have it now making sure it is ok. Cant believe that old thing takes four 9v batts. Holy cow, lucky though I had some around the house and got her working. Tuning it is a little different for sure. But I got it going and got some junk from backyard. But it sure isnt very sensitive, could barely get it to pick up a quarter at an inch.

So you all know what this means.......maybe I'll get my dad an Ace 250 after he looks this old hunter over and decides maybe it is too old for any good. She did pick up my truck at a foot. But my GTI 2500 will pick it up at 4.5 feet with the 10x14 coil. So he might enjoy using this to start with, I however would be very unsatified with it.
But it is cool to see it again because it found 4 shoe boxs full of Civil War stuff back in the 80's. One shoe box is ALL bullets. My brother still has all the loot from back then. OK, so here is a pick of it and maybe I'll actually take it out for a real hunt, till then enjoy the pic of the venerable P.B Fortune Hunter!

That's a relic I'd like to dig up.

Those old hogs found a lot of goodies. As I recall they were hot on gold. How did you detect the quarter? Was it one you buried or threw on the ground? Will be looking for some pics.

well I just tossed it on the ground. I wasnt sure if I tuned it right. Not really sure about the null metal tuning knob....but I will do some more with it. It was very cold today here and I'm not John from Canada, so I will test more on warmer day. Ha. Alan

My 2nd detector was a Garrett Money Hunter TR. Remember picking out my first standing liberty quarter, at almost 5" . 1920D worth $100 back then.
My first v nickel, lots of merc dimes. It had an intensity meter on it, pull tabs would peg the meter, coins, would move the meter a little bit. One tough machine.

Alan, before giving up on your Fortune Hunter make sure you have a fresh set of batteries installed and tune it so you hear the threshold sound. The groundhog circuit with the 10 inch coil should pick up a quarter at 8 to 10 inches!........... Maybe you accidently threw the .25 on top of some iron or other metal debri!???................................Good Luck.............HH...............Joe
