Garrett Infinium or Seahunter?

Neil

Well-known member
Might be getting a Garrett PI. Ive had a couple other units like the Whites dual field and HH PI so Im familiar with how they work.

Looking for some info as to the differences between the two Garrett PI units. It will be mostly used in bay and ocean beaches, wading only and also I don't like swinging those big coils anymore so will be trying to use a coil 10" or less most of the time.

Would like to know if one is more sensitive to smaller gold than the other and if one is deeper/runs smoother(same size coil)
Thank you!

For the extra $500 dollars the Infinium gives you more control over its operation used mainly for dry ground hunting. In specific it give you ground tracking and audio tone ID. Both are rated the same for Beach/Fresh and Salt Water detecting. I own the Infinium and I do like the audio tone ID...the Hi-Lo, Lo-Hi tones. I can be more selective in the targets I dig during the winter months in the hard to dig rocky environment. I can leave the dimes and quarters and yes, SILVER -Lo-Hi, and dig more nickles, pennies and GOLD -Hi-Lo signals. One gold target is usually worth more than all the Lo-Hi signals I could dig in the time of one low tide. During the summer months I search for the fresh drops, using the standard coil. In the winter I put on the 8 inch mono which I find easier to use amongst the rock when the sand has receded. I hope this helps.
If you wish to see side by side comparison of the two machines...download the Garrett catalog at:

The Infinium is also used by some for gold prospecting, not that you will use it for that, but just thought I would through that out there for those who might be. HH and GL

The Infinium is better then the Sea Hunter in that it will beep differently on silver and gold. The ATX will ID iron for you in the top 5 inches, a great milestone for PI detectors. I did very well with the Infinium.

I'm happy with the Seahunter, but if money is no object, go for the Infinium.

I agree i have a seahunter and love it. If your not hunting full time i don't think the difference in price is worth it

I'm responding more than a bit late to this question but I like my Seahunter II a lot. It's very easy to use and it does have a discriminator whereas many PIs do not. I find it's very easy to swing if you use the belt case rather than mounting the controller on the stem.

The waterproof headphones that come with the Seahunter are loud and there's no audio volume control on the Seahunter. If you intend to use it strictly on land, you probably want to get the interface cable (available from Garrett) so you can use aftermarket headphones that have individual volume controls on each earpiece. Garrett also markets the Garrett MasterSound™ headphones with water tight connector for use with a number of its detectors including the Seahunter.

The Seahunter II has it's strengths and limitations like every other machine but more than half the battle is practicing with and getting to know your machine.
Oh, yeah, be prepared to dig deep targets! Good luck.
