garrett grand master hunter

I recently purchased a 1988 Grand Master Hunter on e-bay. It included a 12", 8.5", super sniper coil and headphones in a hard case. I paid south of $300 for all. It was in new condition, seller said it had never been out of the house. Upon receiving it found out it would not work in all metal mode and the speaker had come loose. I have pretty good experience with electronic devices and metal detected for years, so I opened it up and repaired the speaker and decided to send it to Garrett for further repair and tuning. I noticed that this machine was only produced in 1988 and has extensive use of touch pads. I have used the Master Hunter series, such as ADS, in the past and there were no touch pads on the left hand side, only knobs.

Are there any techs with Garrett on this forum or anyone who has experience with this particular model? Hoping that Garrett can affect repairs. Do you think they will have the necessary parts for a model of this age?

If they can't repair it, the 3 coils, hardcase, and headphones are worth more than I paid for the entire package.

Thanks in advance for any input

Mike

Buying from E-bay is always a double edged sword. I think you paid too much for a model that is 10 years old. I guess the bite wouldn't bite so hard, until you found out that it had probably been used excessively. Wires to speakers don't break off nor do you get wear on key pads from a machine just sitting around in the house. I would report the seller and try to get your money back. If that's not possible, call Sue Wilson at Garrett 1-800-527-4011 (U.S.A. and some parts of Canada only). She should be able to tell you if it can be fixed. If it can't, I know Garrett will discount the purchase of a new metal detector trading in the old.Garrett has a fine reputation for excellent customer service. Good luck! It's aways sad to somebody get hosed from Ebay.

ALSO JOHN, ALL IS NOT LOST. I HAVE A GTI 1500 NEW, COMING FROM KELLYCO IN A COUPLE OF DAYS SO I,M STILL IN THE HUNT HA! :garrett: :clapping:

I'd say you got ripped pretty good and I would look to get my money back First of all why would you buy a detector that is twenty years old. 1988 is the year Garrett came out with that machine and it was probably fraught with problems then.. From how you describe it that machine has been beat to death and well it should be at twenty years old. It may cost more to put it in shape than it's worth if Garrett even has the parts still available. Good luck.

Boy....I am sooooo sorry to hear you got taken like that! I'd put it back on e-bay and sell it....unless of course you can get your money back, but I wouldn't count on that.

I wont comment on the vagaries of buying on ebay, much as I want to. I'll only say it can be hit or miss.
I recently got a Grand Master Hunter CXIII on ebay for waaaaaaaay south of $300... I sent it straight away to Garrett, as I bought it with problems going in. At least my seller was honest about that.

Garrett repaired it with a new circuit board and wiring harness, to the tune of $91 for repairs. Apparently, the previous owners had allowed the batteries to remain in the unit during long-term storage and they leaked into the guts.

SO, don't lose hope. They can most likely repair yours and get it back to you. The thing to do is to call and talk to them. They're great people to deal with.

Ain't that the truth. If that guy is a regular he should be turned in. I hate slime balls like that. The buyer should have checked that dork out. I sold a detector some time ago on the classifieds and the buyer was a little wary as he hadn't seen me on there so he checked all over the net getting the goods on me. When he found out that everybody and their dog knows me he was happy and made the purchase.

Yeah yours is a later model. His is the first year the MH came out twenty years ago. I hope for his sake they still have parts because it was revised after that first year and morphed into basically what is sold today. From the sounds of the condition it will need extensive repair. Course he could get lucky anf they consider it a classic and send him a new one for it. Dream on Willy.

I sure hated to see him get stiffed like that but those kinds of cruds are out there.

I kinda suspected that when he said it was made only in 1988. I hope he can get some justice. To be blunt, the odds are he wont see his money again, unless he paid with PayPal. Been there done that :(
Let's all send out positive waves, though, until we know the end result. :)
