hi all i am a new member just would like to say hello to all ................................................... i have just got the garrett AT PRO and just would like to know if the detector picks up coke and if so how do i stop the detector picking it up i live in the northeast england so there is loads of the stuff any help please thanks richard

Welcome Richard! Yes, it hits coke, (coal clinkers) at a mid tone scratchy low 40 TID signal...generally 38-42....just as if it was a gold chain!...sort of a bummer I know, but not all that troublesome considering....after a while you get to sort of know the sound and call it...still, a guy wants to inspect those targets in the water especially....dont worry about it, on a gold ring, it hits hard and solid! Its those scratchy foil signals I like in the water,...a fellow has to go after them!

You can run Pro Zero with disc at 40, and yet you will still be able to hear the soft foil/coke scratches...thats good, you dont have to fear about missing a big chain or ring....If these coke signals are heavy and problematic in your area,, just disregard, but make sure you grab all solid signals above those tones if you are after gold rings....

Welcome to the forum Richard! I wish you luck and look forward to your posts. - Jim

Welcome to the forum and congrats on your purchase! Yes, I have occasionally picked up those "hot rocks" here in New York State and it can be frustrating. They're usually one of those "iffy" signals with VDI in the mid to upper 40s with the occasional 70ish blip. It sometimes sounds like a deep American penny. You have two choices...dig or not dig (very helpful, I know). Spend a long time with your machine and LISTEN to the sounds more than focusing on the numbers.

Some say coke and hammered silver are very close signals. Good luck.

what the hell is coke,i know of two different coke, the kind you drink and the kind you snort, not being funny I just never heard of picking up coke with a metal detector.:bouncy::bouncy:

I laughed so hard when I saw your post. I said the same thing. Maybe because I'm young, and not sure of the meaning.

Hi y'all,

justplainjoe down in East Texas, New ATPro,New detectorist, maybe 10 hours experience with it. I want to know from experienced users the best reasons to buy the 8x5 coil, I've heard and read all the dealers reasons now I want to know is it worth buying; i.e. will I actually use it.

Regards and Semper Fi,

The 5x8 coil will be the best investment you ever made. You might not even put the stock back on anymore. Not showing off (started this hobby), but just in a year and 1 month I'm at 20 gold rings and 17 silver rings and the clad, I made my detector back and 3 times it. GET IT MAN...its a great little coil for everything...goes down just an inch shy of the stock,,,but heck everything I found is no more than 4 inches. good luck

Yeah, but what are the precise differences between the two coils? How does the detector react between the two, and does swaying have anything to do with them? Is there a difference with the VDI readings? Do they change, jump, or are they more stable?

Others MD may or disagree with me, but from experience using the the 8x11 and 5x8. I can tell you that yes the (big coil has higher VDI) VDI numbers does change just a digit or 2. I found that using the 5x8 coil the VDI number is more stable. Extremely effective in trashy area (5X:geek:, you can snife out a dime in a middle of bottle caps and other trash. The other half can only be explain by using it (5X:geek:...LOL

I believe that coke is that crusty light weight greyish bubbly looking stone like refuse that is the end result of burning coal.

Back in the 40's & 50's many houses were heated by coal -- coal clinkers(coke) are the result of(melted) impurities in the coal that didn't burn usually greyish or black. Often one would put them in gravel driveways. Coal is a form or carbon(so are diamonds & graphite) and is technically a metal.it will register on many metal detectors.

Hey thanks for the feedback. Your experience was what I was looking for. You're reply and several others convinced me. I purchased one, when it get s a little warmer I will get out and try it.

Semper Fi, Joe
