Garrett AT Pro Or Teknetics 8000????

Well, this has been a busy weekend checking out detectors. I was going to post this on the Garrett & Teknetics Forums, but did not know if should.. So here I am.

I am in the market for a new detector, having just about used up my Whites 5900 Di Pro SL (guess 20-odd years is enough). I've narrowed my search to mid-range detectors. In particular: the Teknetics 8000 & Garrett AT Pro. They both seem to have similar features, except for the waterproof AT Pro. mode. I'm sort of leaning toward the AT Pro. as it would be nice not having to put a raincoat over the control box if caught in the rain, or wading. However, not certain how much of that I would do.

So guess it boils down to ease of use & how each machine works on coins, relics, etc.

Do not want to start a brawl, or negative type discussion. Just needing feedback from owners of these particular detectors as to their effectiveness in the field.

TIA

I like the 8000 better, I've owned both, I found the pro had poor ergonomics and hard to see the screen , the 8000 is lighter and I just liked it better

Thanks. That is what I'm looking for. I almost purchased the Tek 8k last Friday, but then the AT Pro caught my attention, also the MXT. But I am gravitating back to the 8K. I have read some thought it a little flimsy, but not to the extent it is breakable. Do you have any feedback regarding durability?.

I'm very happy with my AT-Pro. Made lot's of good finds with it, used it from the woods to the water and no complaints. Even hunted in the rain! I do like the 5x8 coil the best. It solves the nose weight issue and is great in heavy trash which I routinely seem to find. In Pro Audio mode there is a whole lot of info in the audio and the selectable iron audio feature can spare you from digging a lot of trash.

I've dug targets in moderate soils as deep as 11" (measured, a wheat) and even 6" in the salt water surf. While that depth in the surf isn't stellar that's still from a machine that is great on land.

With the sniper coil you can go right up against the metal poles and chain link fence and get stuff other machines missed because they can't work that close.

I know I'm keeping mine!

I use the MXT and the AT PRO both have there pluses.
I recently bought and use the Fisher 5 another good choice.
They all have there place so any of these would do the job.

Again, thanks for the feedback. Although leaning toward the 8K, do feel the ATPro is a worthy machine. One question to ATP users. What is the difference between the USA version vs the International version sold in Canada, and I assume overseas? Does it give more accurate readings on Canadian coins? I would assume Canadian silver coins would ring in at the same level as US or Eurpean coins of the same size?

MultiEagle..the Int'l vs domestic AT-Pro question would probably be best answered on the AT-Pro forum. Perhaps you can address the question to John Edmonton, the forum moderator.
I own the Omega. It holds up well in the durabilty department. I think many users assume that because the unit is ultra-light. It won't last. Well, the AT Pro & Omega weigh about the same. If one beats the **** out of their machines, then perhaps consider the older White's units. The control box was made of aircraft grade aluminum. Built like tanks...lol. I own one of the older White's units and they are durable.
The Omega is better balanced than the Pro. The Pro is waterproof to 10 feet. Thats a plus. The Omega's small coil goes deeper than the Pro's small coil.
The AT Pro was created around the Omega/T2 designs. Most AT Pro owners don't like to hear that, but if you look at both machines, its very apparent. Add the 11"/5" DD coil to the Omega, and its a beast IMHO.

I was relic hunting with the atpro with the sniper coil which I was in the pro mode sens max'd out and dug a faint target @ 14" , it was a 6" bolt looked like it came off of a old plow, laying side ways, thats no bull !

I believe the chief difference in the USA and international versions are the units of measure. Metric VS SAE.

i believe they also messed with the range of the medium tone because the way a lot of the older coins were made in europe. not 100%, but i remember seeing it somewhere. i love my atpro. i wouldnt feel right making a comparison because i havent used the 8k

Thanks all for sharing your preferences. I have decided on the Omega 8k, for no other reason than . . . wait for it .... drawing from a hat. :yikes: There just was not enough differences, for me, to quantitatively say one is better for me than the other. Would have liked to take both for a test run. Will post my experience getting up and running on the Teknetics forum.

Well, I did go for the Tek 8K this morning. Thanks all for your input. I have not doubt both machines are good and look forward to maybe meeting some of you afield.

Congrats, HH, Hank
