Garrett AT-Pro.....How does it do in Salt Water Beach's.....

With a standard DD coil. Expanded iron notches. Auto track and manual GB. I have to think it's better than any other single frequency machine offered. Plus you don't have to worry about being splashed.

I have to question whether it actually has 'autotracking' or just a quick auto GB like on the F75/70, MXT Pro. It would be nice if it was tracking and if it was also AGGRESSIVE ground tracking. It would be really nice if Garrett put the operating manual online. Might clear up a few things. I suppose that they might be dribbling out info to keep the excitement level up. ..Willy.

From what I know, it is auto tracking, which is ground tracking.

I have tried several different single frequency machines on salt water beaches with minerals in the sand and they just can't even come close to multi-frequency machines. The last one I tried was a Minelab X-terra 705 which has manual GB, auto-tracking that you can turn on or off and even a beach mode. The best it did was when I put on the 18 khz, 10x5 DD coil, but it still couldn't even come close to a Minelab FBS machine or a White's dual or 3 frequency machine, or one of the Fisher CZ's.

I'm not knocking the AT-Pro in fact I even have one of pre-order but I am not planning to use it at a salt water beach. Hoping it does good (not just ok) at salt water beaches is just putting too high expectations on it (or any other single frequency machine).

The salt beach adds a new set of problems for many machines.
Some machines will have to raise the disc so high to become stable
the depth goes with it.
It could be hit or miss on the salt beach.

I never said it would work great. We all know multi frequency machines do better in wet salt conditions. I did say that with a Double D coil, expanded iron notches and auto and manual GB the machine would do well being a single frequency machine. Is that not true? Did I say it's better than a multi freq machine? But who really knows until someone tries it out on a wet salt situation? It could possibly do pretty well? Especially for being a single freq machine.

From what I can tell...the Fast Track feature is like the CX Plus has, which is, push the button and it is balanced to what the soil is at the time. Auto tracking is the detector keeps tracking by itself like the GTI 2500. The AT PRO doesnt have auto track it has Fast Track....Here is the info at this website: (scroll down a bit to see it) http://mashdetectors.com/mashdetectors/AT_PRO.html

Willy...I dont think the AT Pro needs and aggressive ground tracking as it doesn't have a true all metal mode. I think the Fast Track will do fine is most situations esspecially with a big ground cancelling DD coil.

From Garretts website:

Ground Tracking The ability of a metal detector to continuously measure the ground

The reason I'm interested in whether it has aggressive ground tracking or not is that I also prospect for gold. The areas I nuggethunt in wreak havok with VLF detectors that don't aggressively autotrack (like the MXT does) in DISC. MODE too. An example would be up the Coquihalla R. by the defunct jade mine.. an XTerra 70/705, in both disc. and all metal modes, goes berserk as the tracking tries to keep up with the rapidly changing ground. Doesn't matter what sensitivity setting, tracking offset (705), disc. level. On the other hand, an MXT/M6 can be run at maximum gain with no problems, tracking on. I'm also talking DD coils on all the units. As an aside, PI detectors also hate this ground. ..Willy.

It will do fine, however, given that it is a VLF detector, you will lose half your depth when you use it in wet sand at a salt water beach (unless they have magiced a new way of dealing with this situation).
Mick Evans.

Being a single frequency machine it will handle the wet sand like any other single frequency machine ....You will notice that the videos mention "fresh water" ....Nothing at all was mentioned about "Salt Water" ......The big selling feature of this machine is AT ...All Terrain ......and the fact that it can go down 10 ft all day long .....But what they did NOT mention was anything about Saltwater ...only fresh water .... As long as you stay away from Black sand on the beach, you will probably be able to hunt the dry sand, but will have to turn the Sensitivity so low when getting close to wet sand that you will loose a bunch of depth ..... It's got some nice features if you hunt fresh water , relic , or normal land , situations, but I wouldn't put my bets on Saltwater or wet sand .....Too bad it couldn't do Salt ..... I'm sure it will still be a good seller for the things that it does anyway ....Jim

No matter how well it does on wet, salt sand I think it will better my ACE250
Altho we all want the one machine to do it all, and do it perfectly, we still live in a real world
I've pre ordered the AT Pro figuring it will be a better machine on the Jersey beaches I hit and a better machine on the land
I don't think I can ask more unless someone has a real cheap PI to sell me
You mite want to check some of the posts by "therover" on the fisher classic forum about his "Gold Bug SE on black sand/iron ridden/hot rock beach"
Good Luck

just a little update for the google searchers who find this thread while looking for at pro saltwater performance info:

in south florida....manually Balanced it in the saltwater, wet sand, wherever i went, and it then stayed quiet...rebalanced it whenever i moved to a different environment. I buried a bottlecap at least 8" deep in wet sand and it picked that up no problem

this was a quick test, i will give it a more thoro check later...

The AT Pro works fine on wet sand on Long Island, NY saltwater beach. I set the sensitivity 2 notches below max and ground balance on the wet sand. I can detect a quarter in about 6-7 inches of sand. I have not tried it with the coil submerged in saltwater.
