Garrett ace250 or Tesoro Silver umax

The Bat

New member
A friend of mine is ready to buy his first detector. He is brand new to the hobby and has his choices down to either a Garrett Ace 250 or Tesoro Silver umax. I have a Vac. and have informed him on how much I like it and how good Tesoro brand is, but he just dosen't have the money right now to spend on a more expensive detector. I know this may be a no-brainer being that I am asking on a Tesoro forum, but I know everyone will give an honest opinion. Thanks, The Bat.

I would say the same thing no matter what forum I was on, I would get the Silver

I have both and love both. For what it's worth, I would only use the Ace with a sniper coil. I tried to sell mine 3 times for the same reasons as Ski talked about and someone talked me into the sniper coil and it was from then on my choice in trashy areas. Otherwise, I use the Silver.

Silver Umax .I have had both and I still have the Silver.Take your friend out and show him how to thumb the disc and the difference between a chirp and a beep .He will be right beside u with the Silver against the Vaquera. U will have the depth on him but he will do fine .:twodetecting:

that is a no brainer in my book.......silver

I have both - and although the 250 does have a lot of features, I'm just not that fond of the bell tones. They will both get the goods, but I prefer to mainly hunt by audio, so a display screen is not my main concern. Although I'll use a display screen, it's a secondary tool, but the audio will determine my dig targets. Not saying there is no useful information on a display, just how I hunt. Both will get many finds, see the prior post's.

Silver umax HANDS DOWN!!-----For all the excellent reasons already given.----Belltone=Batty (as in,drove me BATTY).----At least for me it did. --------Del

I've "had" both. Still have the Silver umax. Not a darn thing wrong with the Ace, but it just wasn't for me. After you try different detectors, you really see what's important and what's just "show"... Here's my Pro's and Con's of the Ace vs Silver:

1. 1 battery for Silver vs 4 for the Ace.
2. Silver lightweight vs Ace lightweight, they are both close in weight.
3. Silver was always a little deeper for me than the Ace, especially if using a larger coil.
4. Silver = Lifetime warranty vs Ace two year.
5. Silver has solid build quality vs Ace had "creep" in the rods during swing. (never any problems with the Ace though)
6. Silver disc check = as much info as a screen vs Pretty accurate Ace screen, but still easily fooled.
7. Silver = more coil options vs Ace
8. Tesoro Customer service and coil calibration vs Ace? I'm not sure of their service, but I know they are a reputable, great group of friendly folks.
9. Silver = knobs (my preference) vs. Ace push pads (others prefer)
10. The yellow color of the Ace did not appeal to my "manly" side? Not sure why that is, but I was cognizant of the color when folks were looking at me!

All in all, I just give the nod to the Silver for quality, ease of use, and service. I could easily live with an Ace and be happy (they are great detectors) I just prefer Tesoro's for some reason. I even looked at the Garrett GTI 1500 and 2500, but they weighed a ton and my surgically repaired shoulder can't take that much weight. After using all of the big, fancy detectors with all of the bells and whistles, you somehow find the simplicity and ease of use of Tesoro's is hard to beat.
