Garrett Ace 250

I bought a Garrett Ace 250 a week ago and have started using it only at playgrounds in the sand as the ground is still somewhat frozen. I find it very frustrating in that I have set the detector to Coin and yet it beeps when I scan over bottle caps and cans. I notice that it doesn't beep when I'm over iron, the target ID simply moves over to the iron scale and that's it. I was under the impression it would beep in the coin mode only when coins are discovered. I know I'm new at this, what am I doing wrong? Help.

First of all turn your sensitivity down to four bars. Since it is a metal detector and cans and bottle caps are metal - it will beep on them. Next time you hit a bottlecap try hitting the elimination button and see if that knocks it out.

Cans you will have to live with as they are just to big for your machine to ignore. You can size them with your coil and generally determine that they are too big to be a coin. It isn't magic and with a little practice and listening to the info on this forum you will have it knocked. It takes a bit of practice to master this hobby. I've been at it 42 years. You have a ways to go yet. Just be patient, It will all work out.

And who told you that your detector would only signal on coins in coin mode? If that were the case you would be leaving a lot of valuable items behind. It will signal on coins and any other metal object of the same conductivity, like rings and jewelry.

Thanks Bill for your words of support. I did as you suggested and went out again today and did a couple of playgrounds and came up with 26 cents. I was excited. I think I'll stick to sand for now just to familiarize myself with my detector.

Hey zamora. If we ever do get together for a hunt don't let my wife see the hog.

That's the best place for newbies to learn is in the bark chip playgrounds or whatever they are covered with. Gets you set up for hunting in the dirt. Practice that centering of target and pinpointing and you'll have it whipped.

Well things are looking better all the time. I went out on Saturday to a local beach and found close to $4.00. I then went out again on Sunday to a playground and found $3.04. Again today, I hit another playground and came up with three pennies and a ring. Not sure the value of this ring but man I think I'm getting the hang of this. Of course, along with all of this, I'm digging beer caps and pull tabs. I even dug up a little metallic toy car.
