Garrett/Ace 250 take a bashing...

.... and is championed by yours truly. Over on the Tesoro forum there was some "discussion" of the Cibola over the 250. We Garett users were likened to "paid bashers". Here was my response:

"I'd buy the Cibola if I had to pay three times what the 250 costs..."

"The Ace 250. It's a toy. The Cibola is a serious machine..."

"Cibola is a great machine. Southern Treasures has a used Cibola for sale..."
(quoted comments from others in the thread)

Zeb, talk about your hired bashers! I've used Tesoro for years, expect I will always have at least one and currently own three of them: A Vaquero, Golden and Tiger Shark. Each has its own attributes. None of them are perfect.

But good is good and what works, well, works. I own an Ace 250, too. And it works. Quite well. At a value price. So do my other Garrett machines.

To say that only this or only that is good, and the rest are worthless is folly and only expresses slavish devotion. There is room for all, and denying others the right to try something different based on personal bias is, well, downright un-American.

Allow me to share a few comments from Mr. Charles Garrett:
"(sic)...Because a quality metal detector is really a scientific instrument, you can't ecpect it to be inexpensive. In fact, buying a cheap, off brand detector will shorten your career, because you won't find anything with it!
I make it a policy never to talk bad about the detectors made by other, reputable companies. And I also recommend that you don't need the most expensive model available, from my company or any other. Over the years my company has built a wide range of detectors. Yet, our one continuing goal is to give the customer the most value for their money - regardless whether he buys one of our models or not.
We've even finally achieved my personal goal of a simple, capable, OneTouch computerized instrument that beats that $200 price (Ace 250)."
excerpted from the book, "Treasure Hunting for Fun and Profit", by Charles Garrett..

Seems we should all be as fair, don't you agree?

Well, they better not bash the Ace 150 or I may have to post a few goodies for them to look at.

Did notice something kinda funny on that forum posted by ZEB though David. :)

the little 250 gets my vote for the price - great for a beginner like myself... I'm starting to get a little more used to it - just a fun machine... found the fork in some tree roots, no tellin how old it is. What can I use to clean this rust off??? Thanks...

For the buck Ace 250 is the best buy on the market..Aways thought the IDX pro was but heck the Garrett only costs half as much..End of discussion...

When the 250 first came out, a few of the Tesoro Loyalists picked a few of them up and after an hour or so of use pronounced the 250 as useless junk. They were trying to run them as you would a Tesoro when hunting relics, wide open. Well, we all know that the little 250's won't run full Sens. and still be stable. They were designed to have that extra push when you find a deep target and you want to get a better fix on it by bouncing up the Sens. I have a Tesoro Tejon that I like to use, but not so much as a coin shooter. It is great for hunting those deep relics out in a field somewhere but is not so great in a pulltab littered park, trying to ferret out some clad. I'll use any kinda rig that gets me some goodies in the place I'm hunting, don't really care what brand it is. Me and my hunting buddies use various brands of rigs and we hoot each other on occasion about swingin' this or that type of rig, but it's all in fun. To bash one kind of detector or another without swingin' one for 100 hrs. is the sign of a fool, IMHO.

Hy to you all,Since i have 2 kids and wife the budget was tight and still is but it took me almost 2 years to buy my 1 detector.Ive read and ask question and tried 3 other brands and at the end i'm very satisfied with my choice for a first detector.Ace 250 and a whites bulleye 11 pinpointer.I almost got another detector without saying which one i'm so happy that ive waited a weak more before geting it.Then" BOOM "ace 250 everybody was talking about it.All the forums were talking about how good of a machine Price and Quality and very light too.Well so far ive use it for about one hour in all and without any experience but ive read so much about how to use it and tune it that in my backward i found a coin that ESSO oil compagny use to give to customer in 1979.It was a collection of all the Prime minister of Canada.I was so happy.Maybe for you guys it's not much but for me i waited 2 years for this what a trill. For the price i'm very satisfied and c'ant wait for spring to get here up here in Laval,Quebec,Canada..Anyway happy hunting and enjoy this super hobby of ours...Ciao Anthony

...and since Ive just woken up midday and am still half asleep, I feel the need to pontificate (those who are not in the mood for one of my long winded tales, feel free to skip the rest of this post :)).

Indeed, there is almost a fanatic adoration in some circles, concerning detector brands. You see this quite often with those models which originate from Prescott AZ. Which is too bad, because like you say, features, function and value are of key importance - not just what the sticker on the housing says.

Ive noted that many Garrett users are users of other brands and/or have come to use Garrett Gear from "the round-about way" - that is, after using other equipment. Often they are surprised that when given the chance, Garrett Gear meets or exceeds that performance offered by other brands, including their "favorite".

You hit it close to the mark when you suggested that Garrett's dont really work like many other machines; that is to say they "interface" differently with the user and trying to make them behave the way this or that detector does is a fool's game:

"When the 250 first came out, a few of the Tesoro Loyalists picked a few of them up and after an hour or so of use pronounced the 250 as useless junk. They were trying to run them as you would a Tesoro when hunting relics, wide open. Well, we all know that the little 250's won't run full Sens. and still be stable. They were designed to have that extra push when you find a deep target and you want to get a better fix on it by bouncing up the Sens."
{{{ Now, that's how I've ended up using the Ace 250, based on experience. But, perhaps Garrett should've added such comments to the handbook! :) }}}

However, let the Garret Gear of your choice work in it's own fashion and you become convinced of what many people already know - Garretts work and they work according to their designers ideal, which is to say quite well!

Now, brand loyalty is admirable and something we all share to one degree or another, based on our personal experience. But, you put it well, when you said:

"I'll use any kinda rig that gets me some goodies in the place I'm hunting, don't really care what brand it is...to bash one kind of detector or another without swingin' one for 100 hrs. is the sign of a fool, IMHO".

I might add that it's the game of the worst kind of fool, the boor.
I suppose with all that said, it's time to put this matter to rest - along with myself :sleepy: ...

Thanks for your concise summary, BCD.

I've been hearing raves about the 5 inch excelerator coil for the 2500. Can some of you give me some reports? Some of the schools and parks I hunt are full of trash, and the 9 1/2" coil that came with it is so sensitive it picks up everything. Just wanted some insight before I bought one.

Yeah any combination is 10% machine and 90% operator. And if you ain't smarter than your machine you need to get another hobby.:)

I don't know about being smarter than your machine. I think you need to learn to communicate with it. It tells you all you need to know if you just learn to listen. Jim
