Might be that there are, indeed, that many things in the ground, depending on where you are hunting. This is South Carolina, bro, and people have been here for a very a long time... I find there is little virgin ground here.
Too, you are likley dealing with the common belief among newcomers that detectors actually DO eliminate everything you don't want to find - essentially, that the detector wont react if it is set to "ignore something." After all, thats' what the TV commercials and videos tell you, right??
Oh, that it were so!
Garrett Detecting Truth Number One:
"There is far more trash than treasure in the ground for the detectorist and his machine to filter through."
Garrett Detecting Truth Number Two:
"Junk targets present all sorts of different responses, all in the same target."
This is in stark contrast to your average smooth, homogenous coin, for example. Imagine, if you will, your average piece of canslaw with its crazy angles and twisted metal, lying in wait for the hapless newbie to scan over it. And I havent even touched on the concept of target masking...
Finally, here's
Garrett Detecting Truth Number Three:
"Garrett machines are SENSITIVE."
You probably have your gain (SENS) too high and, well, when you run that way you end up with a handful of honking, hooting monster. I had all the same problems, until I actually calmed down and listened to Bill!
Stay with the start up coin settings, but change this one thing:
Turn the gain (SENS) down from the factory start-up setting to 5 and try it again. Then, let us know how that works.
