Garrett 1350 - which coil?

Hi
I just bought a 1350, it came with 2 coils, 7*10" and 10*14"DD I am a little confused as when and where to use either to maximise the machines potential.

I understand the bigger coil is better to use in highly mineralized soils but in "normal" soils which one should give me the best results?
I have done a little bit of field testing but I feel because of my inexperience my results may not be accurate.

I really bought the machine to look for old rubbish holes to dig bottles but after looking thru this forum Ive got keen on searching for coins etc!!!

Thanks in advance, any help is sincerely appreciated

Don W (New Zealand)

ps are there any other Kiwis out there?

I also have both coils. For coin hunting, schoolyard, etc., I use the 7X10 OR the 4.5" Sniper. I very seldom use the bigger coil due to the way it balances, the chance of mis ID'ing a target due to multiple targets being under the coil at the same time, and it is harder to pinpoint with the larger coil. For what I do so far the 7X10 goes deep enough also. If you are looking for large targets deep, the larger coil would benefit you though.

Born in Scotland, grew up in Wellington NZ, living in Japan......so maybe a ScotKiwiSushi kind of person now. :D:D

Was in NZ in early April. Did some detecting around the Shotover River and Arrowtown, enjoyed that a lot and the fresh air is worth WAY more than any 'yellow stuff' in the ground.
Also had a go at Petone beach in Wellington after a very strong southerly storm and picked up a few goodies. Some literally on the top of the sand and mixed with the seaweed. ;)

Haven't got a 1350 so can't comment on that, but suggest you get to a popular beach near you soon Don (which part of NZ are you in?) and you can't miss the sound of those NZ$1 and $2 coins!! Great fun. Enjoy. And looking forward to seeing your future finds......

Im from Whangarei, plenty of beaches up here. I guess Im gonna have to give it a go. Still feeling a bit shy about it though!!
I didnt buy the machine with the intention of looking for coins, but the "bug" has bitten.

I took the 1350 to show my elderly neighbour today and as I was walking down the footpath scanned the grassy strip. Couldnt believe it when I picked up a 1 cent piece at 100mm. My first find, IM HOOKED!!!!

Great to hear the first coin has come your way Don!
For others reading, 1 cent coins (and 2 cents for that matter) are no longer used in New Zealand and the last ones were in 1989. They are bronze.
And this may help you early on Don, for your reference if you don't already know:
Modern 5 cents, 10 cents, 20 cents, 50 cents are all Cupro-nickel
$1 and $2 are Aluminium-bronze
Old coins......well, you have a chance to find British gold coins there too! ;)

So, wrap up warm during this winter and get out there and just give it a go. :)
Chances are most of those beaches around Whangarei have never ever had a detector over them, so you're half way there already. And please don't feel shy about posting a 1 cent coin on here either, because I for one like to see.

The 10x14 is basically for hunting in highly mineralized areas but with its greater ground coverage ( a full 14 inches ) it would work just fine for hunting for the rubbish holes. For coinshooting stick with the 7x10 unless you're hunting for them in hot ground, and later on maybe the 4.5 Sniper.

does the sniper coil work on the 1350?? i thought it was for the ace250. at least thats what i bought it for. but i have both machines and would be great to use it on my 1350 instead of buying one.

Im heading of to a nearby beach this morning. Im taking daughter (15) for moral support. Im feeling rather shy about "scrounging" on the beach but I guess I will get over it!!!

Taking next week off work and heading down to Whakatane to look for my (deceased) Grandmothers engagement ring which, according to family legend, was lost under her house.

While im down there Ill check out Ohope beach and a few other spots I have in mind

Ill report back next weekend with some pics

The 4.5" Crossfire II works just fine on the 1350 (Cat# 2218800)
