I received my Garrett Sea Hunter Mark II few days ago.After some hours reading the manual and watching the instructional video I decided to test it on my garden.Works great to detect coins,iron,knifes...but not GOLD!!!! Put 2 gold rings together 4 inches away the search coil....and nothing.I was checking on standar trash eliminitation so I changed to discrete trash elimination..and nothing!!!Cant detect GOLD!!!My elimination was on 7..then 6...5...4...3...2...1..0 and NOTHING

Doesn't make sense to me. If it's getting the higher conductivity ranges, and the lower ones too,
it should be getting the mid ranges. I'd try with some other known gold before I gave up on it.
Also.. You may be seeing a bit of the "fresh buried" effect where the rings aren't showing up
to well, but might ring hotter if they were in the ground a while.

like NM5K said try 5-6 gold rings before you get upset. PI"s love all metal so should pick up gold rings i don't have this detector so cant tell ya the best setting but 7 trash elimination seems a bit high to me
i"v got some questions for ya 1- how small are the rings & are they marked gold & if so what k are they?.2- could the rings be hollow or fake?.3- were you air testing or putting the rings in the ground?.
here's some info for ya- gold is one of the hardest metals to find with a detector & is there for the ezeyist to miss- if a detector is not set correctly the first thing you"ll miss is small gold- PI detectors love salt water as i understand it the salt in the water & sand enhances the detection depth- if you eliminate foil you"ll miss small gold.
i"d practise a bit more on the gold & if you try some more gold rings (i"d try larger & smaller rings) & it"s sill not detecting them i"d look at the eliminate knob to see if it"s working if it"s still not working call Garrett & see what info they can give they may have a dealer in Mexico. i"v found when i first started detecting i would get frustrated quickly & not learn all the info in the manual & miss good targets it was int until i had a bit more experience that i found gold rings & yes i had a PI detector & no i never found gold with it it was my inexperience not the detector

...they see iron as the high end of detection and what we call "lower conductivity" items, like gold, as far below that.
To top it off, no PI detector is a great discriminator - it just isn't in the cards with the current state of technology. They are certainly nowhere near the VLF detector in that regard. The best so far is probably the Garrett infinium.
So, try reducing your DISC to something near minimum, as recommended.
Honestly, for wading in shallow water at the shore, the Sea Hunter is probably not the best choice unless you are comfortable with the idea of digging all targets, including iron.
It doesnt help the detectorist that the Sea Hunter was originally designed for diving, where there is far less "trash."
In the dive environment, you want to find everything, because when you find iron, you have found signs of human activity. It's a big ocean out there, and the diver needs to know he's in the right place.

Perhaps you should take a good look at yourself??? Most of us don't appreciate comments like that. I had a Garrett Sea Hunter and Infinium. Both easily picked up gold. PI detectors have a learning curve to them, and not recommended for new people to the hobby of metal detecting. I hope you get it figured out.

[size=large][/size]You may want to just calm down a bit and 1) re-check yourself and determine if you're doing everything right 2) listen carefully to these old hands on the forum who have had similar experiences with sea hunting for gold 3) if all else fails, call Garrett and lay your problem on them - after all, they made the unit and they will know exactly how to help you 4) use your head when you talk with the folks at Garrett and don't go off the deep end and start threatening them - just take it easy and work with them. I've never personally done that kind of hunting so, I can't really offer advice on what to do except what I've told you so far. But, I do sympathize with your frustration and hope you get your problem resolved quickly and without a lot of hassle. Thanks for reading . It's strange that Mel Fisher found the Spanish Galleon the Atocha with $425 million in gold aboard with a Sea Hunter and you can't detect a gold ring with it. I'd say you're doing something wrong. THis detectorhas been used all over the world for 30 years. It hasn't lasted that long by being a piece of junk. The secret to this hobby is - you have to be smarter than the detector.

His Ring Test Is Probably Correct and on par using the air test. That's what I would get on my infinium and previous Garrett Mark II Sea Hunter. You can not air test objects using a PI metal detector. The object being tested needs some sort of matrix around it. I have dug gold rings down to 14" and even deeper using my Infinium.

I cannot tell you how many articles I have read on the numerous PI machines available on the market. I decided on the Sea Hunter for the ease of use plus the ability to take the detector underwater. I have not been disappointed with my purchase from Sports Authority, which was running a special on this machine. Additionally I purchased the larger coil from Kellyco. I hunt the Treasure Coast beaches and have found numerous coins, including a Spanish Reale cob since September 07. Be prepared to dig all, I never turn down a target, especially in this area. The Spanish Reale was a light signal and was very deep. I highly recommend it as a moderately priced machine that is very easy to use, especially for the beginner.

I loved my old Sea Hunter, 500 and brought it with me to the virgin beaches near Jaco Beach Costa Rico.I chose this particular detector for searches in primarily black sand. Before I unpacked, I fell striking my head on my majogney bedframe, causing a subdural hematoma on the back of my skull. I was in a full coma, for three months, then 4 years later, I was told by my rehab doctors that walking in waste deep water was therapudic, and armed with my Garrett. It would be perfect as I fell allot, and their detector apppeared 'Eric proof'I finally found my detector, unfortunatly the charger, headphone and assories were somewhere left in the jungles of Costa rico. I immediatly call my heros at Kellyco here in Florida. Unfortunatly after 5 years these accessories were no longer in stock. They suggested that I speat with Garrett directly to whom I immediatly called and to whom I recanted my plight. 'hold-on'Back on line and offered me the newest model, for half the the price. all i needed to do was send them what was left and a check and ill be back grazing the sands of our treasure coast. Im getting back my long missed favorite hobby, and thank kellyco, their staff and famiily, and forever The Garret Family who care. God Bless the Diggers!

Quite simply excellent all round. I'm a beginner at this but found it easy to use in all conditions (ie. wet sand/dry sand, shallow and deep dives). Everything it promised and then some.... had some good finds.
As our diving expedition was a very expensive trip we also brought a Tesoro Tiger Shark - just in case - and to give us a few more options (or so we thought). The Garrett performance was similar to the Tesoro (both being very good) but it was easier to use for a beginner. Obviously the Tesoro had a few more tweaking options available but unfortunately it only lasted 3 dives due to water leaking in at 25m! And YES we did look after it.
The Garrett would easily be our recommendation for a GOOD, easy to use, underwater detector. Get one - you'll love it I'm sure!

This unit is very sensitive and will find deep targets. I hunt the wet sand and the surf in all metal mode with elimination set at zero. You will dig some trash but dig all targets because treasure hids among trash. I found a wedding band my third time out. It was at least 12 inches down in the sand in about a foot of water. I would recommend this unit to anyone that hunts wet sand and in the surf. If you want a dry sand unit I don't think this would be your best choice.

I have been using My Sea Hunter for about 4 months and I love it. I was worried before I purchased the unit because I read in some reviews that it is noisy. I live in Hawaii were there is lava rocks and black sand beaches and I've found it to be stable without having to discriminate. I've found mainy gold rings, silver rings, and a titanium ring with a nice diamond in it. In my opinion the Sea Hunter is a great machine that works great for me, and if this is a machine that you are considering then I hope that you like it as much as I do.

Yeah PI's don't fare well in some air tests and he might have run into "metallurgical phenomenon".
