Garret propointer on/off

Hi , I have got to ask this question ...... Does anyone have any idea if Garrett has addressed changing/replacing the "power on/off" button on these things? I know there's a fair amount of people that has had his/hers for 6 months, a year, 2 years or however long and no problems but there are literally hundreds and of them out there with this issue still. From what I understand Garrett has done an outstanding job of repair/replacing units with nearly no questions asked.....But with the same problematic switches?...I mean c'mon Garrett you build something as badass as an AT Pro and can't get a solid on/off switch into the BEST DESIGNED pin pointer in the ENTIRE WORLD?.... it's been on the market now for how many years? One would expect to see this on 1st or maybe some of the second year production runs but not this far down the road....not trying to ruffle nobody's feathers I'm just askin/sayin.

Mine has that problem, but I've gotten used to the correct way of turning it on and off. No sweat. By the way, I just finished my first battery on it. 8 months on and off, with first battery. Today, I found out which noise it makes when the battery goes low. ;-)

I just sent mine to Texas for repair....it felt as though the switch broke or something...but I sure feel blind without it!! I'm getting pretty good pinpointing with the Ace 350....but want my pointer back ASAP..

My Pro Pointer is one of the first electronic pinpointers made. It has found thousands of coins. I have worn out one rubber switch cover, but the switch still works. Should the switch quit working, I would just get another Pro Pointer. Electronical mechanical switches probably do have a limited life span. Mine is still working. Am I lucky? Beats me.

I am about to return my Pro Pointer for the following issues (which seem to be common):

1) The unit falsely beeps and vibrates if I use too much pressure on the tip. I understand the tip is not designed for “excessive” pressure. I am talking about pressing the unit’s tip into a pile of loose soil…..not compacted and hard.

2) Sometimes the unit continues to beep and vibrate even after it has been removed from the hole and is no longer near a metal object.

3) Sometimes the on/off button has to be pressed multiple time in order to turn the unit on and get it to remain on.

4) When my first battery was depleted, the unit failed to give me a low voltage tone to warn me until just before it shut down. I'm not sure if that's the way the unit is designed to work or not. I expected it to warn me maybe 15-20 minutes or so before it would shut down.

My pointer is only 6 months old. We'll see how well they stand behind their product.

Frank, your symptoms are identical to mine! I took a vid of turning mine on and holding it in my hand and it would start beeping without moving it. I sent it in and they quickly fixed it. It worked great right away but now a few months later it will still randomly start beeping. Not gonna mes with it right now cause i dont want to be without it. It'll have to wait till winter

Yep, sent mine in last week for same reasons. When it's working it's pretty darn good.

When its working its one of the best.Mine is on its way back to me i had to send it in last week.I also wonder why garrett won't address recurring problems.

Flaky pro-pointer operation (me too). I've experienced that same elusive and sporadic pro-pointer behavior mentioned here.

My problem/solution may not help others but it has happened to me and I thought I'd pass it on. All of the symptoms mentioned in earlier posts.

It has harpened 3 times and to my frustration and embarrassment, it was my own fault every time. It turns out that in my haste, I forgot to remove my wedding ring before putting my gloves on, That really drives the pointer independently nuts but only when you happen to be holding from about 1/2 way down it's length or closer towards the tip. The pointer also gets messed up (detuned) totally if your holding it in your ring hand and power it on with the other hand. You would think after the second time I would have been more careful but still managed to do it again 2 days ago. At least the 3rd time I knew exactly what was wrong.

I sent my Pro Pointer off Sept 15th. Exactly 1 week to the day, I rec'd the unit back from Garrett.....warranty repaired....no charge. My only cost was shipping to the factory......but not for my return shipment. Garrett paid the return shipment fees.

All of my issues APPEAR to have been resolved. I will get a better idea once I'm out in the field with it searching a recovery.

Man, I felt "naked and afraid" without my PP!!! LOL

I must say the timely response by Garrett is impressive.

I just repaired two PPs for the same symptoms. The way I tested for a fault was to turn the unit on and hold the detecting end in hand so the battery end is in the air. Swing, shake smoothly in an arc up and down. The unit swould sound off or false. I could put slight pressure on the tip with the button facing up and it would also false. I did the repairs like the ones on the tube videos but I did not use heat shrink tubing and did not unsoldure any wires. I just placed some good cloth electrical tape I have on the board where the wires will fold over when reassembled. I also separated the 3 wires just enough to wrap tape across all three front and back and squeeze between the wires to keep them separated and insulated. You must place the on off button in the on position before sliding out the board and before reassembly. It will get damaged if you ignore that warning. Putting it back together is a pain to get the wires from interfering. I placed electrical tape on my screwdriver tip before starting so the screw head was not damaged. One of my probes is still under warranty and this whole repair is reversible if I need to send it back.
On another note, both probes had a date inside on the label of 2008. Version 1.29 I think. I know they were sold about thee years apart, one last year. They may have had thousands made at one time and just need to sell out before redesigning the defect. The label can be read if you pull the button rubber cap off. It is easily replaced back on. I would be interested to know how garrett repairs them and if anyone has a different year label.
Mine work as they should now with no falsing.

I have had mine back for a week now and it seems to be working alot better its like they addressed some of the other issues like the falseing i used to get a lot too.

Update on the above repair I made. The pinpointer I use the most is falsing again. The wires are apparently not the problem. I plan to send it to Garrett to have it repaired and hopefully find out what happened to mine. Sometimes it's fine other times unusable. I guess I jumped the gun on my post. I should have done more testing first.
