Im excited about starting a new hobby and im looking for the right detector. i found a Garret gtax1000 for sale
on line for 250. should i buy it? the owner says its an $800 detector. thanks.

It was a good detector back in it's day and still is. It just does not have all the bells
and whistles the new one's have.

The gtax line is a good line excellent coin shooters and finds silver easy but for 250 you can by yourself a brand new Ace 250 with warranty. Garretts are awesome no matter what the line it just depends on the person behind the machine that makes the difference.

Im starting to read a little but my curiosity is ahead of me. it all started when i was 10. i come from a country on the Mediterranean sea. while playing in our back yard digging i found few old coins 9 total. i kept them and brought them with me to the states. after library research. (no google search yet at the time) i found out that they were byzantine coins from the era of Justinian the first and second 1500 years old. I'm going back in September, and i want to take an all around good detector with me. that have good depth capabilities and can detect gold as well, the area is very rich with ancient places. roman, Egyptian, Greek, Islamic era, christian era you name it it has passed through my country. and i did find old grave yards with clay oil lanterns that i still have back home. thanks for reading this.

You can pick up a Gti 1500 used for around 350 on ebay. Its a great detector. HH:thuymbup:

How good is it detecting Gold. and if you are looking in a stream or shallow water can you stick the search coil or plate under or u need a whole different detector for this. i never ever tried
one before. thanks

For gold nugget hunting you need a machine you can ground balance to
handel the ground mineralization nuggets appear in . I'm not sure you can
do that with the 1500 and also you need a higher kHz than the 1500 that
runs at about 7 kHz. You want something at 14 kHz or higher. If your serious
about nugget hunting you might as well invest in the AT Pro or the AT Gold.

Right now Ebay has one for sale: Garrett GTI 1500 Metal Detector, 9.5 Imaging Coil, 4.5 Scorcher 2500 Coil, NR!

Salida, is right, you need the higher kHz and ground balance. The AT pro at 14kHz and the gold at 18kHz, and both are waterproof to 10 feet or 3 meters. The higher the kHz the more sensitive to smaller targets, but you lose depth.Good luck....
