Garret 250 feedback

I am just getting started in "Treasure" hunting and have been referred to the Garret 250. Just for curiosity sake, is this a good recommendation? When I was much younger I played with my dads old radio shack unit and it was pretty much, well,not very good. If it picked anything up,you could pretty much see it.Thanks for any and all feed back.Lowell Lynn
