Gain setting opinions?

yeah what's eveyone think about setting the gain to 10 rather then the factory set 5? seems to me if it's a more solid sound (as it is at depth with gain at 10) your less likely to miss it then if you had it set on 5. Particularly if your headphones aren't the best or your in a very noisy location.
Myself I've always hunted with it set on 6, but I'm thinking of giving it ago on 10. After all you can always consult the depth gauge to determine depth rather then listen for how loud the sound is.......

You hit the nail right on the head! Most people think that Gain 10 will go deeper than Gain 6. Not true, what they are experiencing, IMO, is they are not missing those soft whispers that are so easily missed with a lower gain. Gain does nothing more than amplify the volume of the signal. Like turing the volume past 5 on a CZ. I played around with it, gain 3 picked up the same deep targets that 10 gain did once I had them located. They are just so faint that they won't even barely break the threshold, but they are still being picked up. Try it! If you know your Explorer well, you will not miss those softer tones, it just makes it easier with 10 gain.
I use 10 Gain now. Early last year I tried and it drove me nuts, but now I can handle it no problem. It sure helps you hear those deep ones that are easily passed up, IMO. But it also can be nerve-racking if you can't handle all loud, all the time. If you can handle Pantera or Korn cranked on a loud stereo, you can handle 10 gain! <IMG SRC="/forums/images/biggrin.gif" BORDER=0 ALT=":D">

Wouldn't think of anything under. Infact when I reset my detector every so often and forget to adjust the gain I think there is a serious problem,of course until I realize. Two days ago I was digging enfield bullets at 14-16 inches. 100%TRUE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
