Gain and Sensitivity

Hello all. I've been kicking back enjoying the forum after my dealer told me about this place. Anyways I went ahead and splurged and bought the CTX. After learning the machine, I got out and started digging alot of clad and a few wheats, none deeper than 4 inches. I was running combined, auto +3, gain at 14, modified silver, deep on, and so on...... I started to get a bit frustrated. I was wondering if the super dry soil had something to do with it. The soil is like concrete.

Anyways, today I increased the gain to 26, and increased the the manual sensitivity to 30. What a difference. In an hour I had dug a Silver Washington quarter, a Merc, and a Rosey with some clad mixed in. Those silver targets were no shallower than 7 inches with the Merc at 9 inches.

So much to learn, but I am enjoying the fun. Thanks to all who have made the learning the CTX a better experience.

Congrats on the Silver . I am in Indiana and are ground is supper dry I am digging coins at 8inches + I got my deepest coin Wed. a 1918-S merc at 11 inches in supper dry ground.:twodetecting::minelab::thumbup:

Welcome to the forum and congratulations on the finds. Once you get that CTX fine tuned, you will have a LOT of fun......

Were you running in auto or manual in sensitivity and how about your gain?

One other thing I would like to add. After switching to manual, and running the sensitivity to 30, and after I locked onto a target, I would switch back to auto +3 to check. The auto +3 was a very erratic choppy signal versus the manual. I was curious if anybody else noticed this.

Did you run noise cancel to stabilize the auto sens?

First thing I would do after turning my machine on is auto noise cancel. Maybe it has something to do with the soil. I did notice that the auto sensitivity was running at only 14-17.

Actually, I've found just the opposite. Manual cranked up to 30 is much more erratic than Auto +offset for me. Guess it depends on the ground matrix and target density. HH Randy

thanks for replying Digger. I was surprised as well. I was actually following you as a guideline to set my machine up.
Funny how things differ all over the country.

Yes it is. And that is what I've been trying to express when people want to know what settings or programs to use. As I've said, there isn't a magic forumula. Just learn the functionality, know what setting is required to obtain a specific result, and set your CTX 3030 up for your style of hunting, the sites you hunt and the targets you desire. Looks like you've done well on all counts! HH Randy

HI Vanbibir

What do you mean by Gain here, I understand the sensitivity but don't know what you mean by Gain. Im new to the 3030 and enjoying playing with the settings, cheers

Hey Gem, from what I understand, gain will help you hear deeper targets. The lower the gain, the softer the hit, the higher the gain, the shallow and deeper targets will sound the same. Some guys prefer to hear a softer sound so that they can differenciate between deep and shallow targets.

If you want to play with the gain settings, press and hold the voulume knob at the 3:00 position. Volume, threshold, and gain settings are there.
Adjust to how you would prefer to hear objects. Hopefully this helps.

Hi Vanbibr, thanks for your answer, I thought there was maybe a gain adjustment on the sensitivity settings that I had missed in one of the menus.
