Gain and SAT (Tom in AZ)

Tom,
Did you get an answer on your questions regarding gain and VSAT settings? Your post got buried below.
There are some very knowledgeable nugget shooters on here and I hope that bringing the subject back up will get them to weigh in with their experience. Lots of good books out there on the subject...Zip-Zip by Larry Sallee is excellent and I believe there is an updated version now available.

Thanks for the response and repost. I have not had alot of response, but I think that the low response is my fault for mixing questions on one post.
OK here is the newbie question of the day
When using GAIN
Should V-SAT be increased as GAIN is decreased
assuming MXT is at mfg recommended settings <img src="/metal/html/confused.gif" border=0 width=15 height=22 alt=":?">

Hi Tom,
Adjusting the gain and V/SAT is sort of a balancing act. If your machine is acting up due to heavy mineralization, just lowering the gain will sometimes quiet things down enough to be useful. If you have to go too low on the gain, i.e. 5 or lower than crank it back to 6 to 8 and put in a little SAT. And don't overlook hyper SAT. The manual claims very little depth loss and I like the higher pitched sound of the target in that mode. I'll be over Rich Hill way come the end of October for the rendezvous with the gang there and will be giving mine a good workout in that red dirt there. Later, RD

Thanks RD
I have been playing with Gain and V-SAT in different soils and air test. Kind of a mix as you go adjustment.
I have been out at Rich Hill a few times, man that is a scrap iron breeding ground. I have never tried an MXT there, but I bet it will do good. That place has alot of hot rocks and minerilezation. My Lobo ST did not like all of the iron. Good luck on the HILL.

Hi, Tom, I just purchased that updated book, which includes the information from both previous volumes with updated information for the newer detector models, and also the older information for detectorists who have older models. It is very informative and helpful, especially for a fairly new detectorist. I highly recommend it!
