Gain and Depth Reading

Hi,
Try this. Set the MXT for preset Gain. Then find a target that reads 3" deep. Keep the trigger sqeezed, and advance the Gain. As you hear the "blip" indicating the next level of Gain, the Depth reading will drop one inch to 2".
Go back to Preset, 3". Now back it off to the next "blip" and you will see 4" depth. Back down another "blip" and you have 5" depth.
Something to keep in mind when using anything other than Preset Gain. Depth reading is nothing more than signal strength based on a stock coil, Preset Gain, and a coin size target. What I found interesting is that White's figured each notch of Gain as being worth exactly one extra inch.

Steve,
I did the test.
If you release the pinpoint before altering the gain the MXT reports the SAME depth as before, just a different strength signal. So the depth reading is CORRECT for each gain setting, not just for the preset setting.
Its not realistic to alter gain whilst holding the trigger in. its ok if you want a softer signal, but depth will then be wrong.

Hi John,
My bad! Hope I do not have too many people freaked out now thinking the depth reading is off unless you are set at the Preset Gain. White's was smart enough to compensate... and I should have been smart enough to release the trigger between adjustments!!!
