G2 question about hunting in trashy areas

2 Much Trash

Well-known member
I know this may seem to be some dumb questions, but I guess the dumbest ones are the ones I don't ask. I'm a little embarrassed cause I've been detecting for at least 30 years, but with old school machines. I've only had my G2 out 3 times since I got it and have done fairly well. I had not taken it to any real trashy areas until a few days ago. I just wanted to spend some time learning the machine, the tones, feel, etc. I took it to a hilltop I knew was loaded with iron, nails, and such from my experience there with with my other machines. I ground balanced with no problem, set disc at 40 and started working the site. Sure enough the low tones were singing out almost every square foot and numbers were reading all below 40, mostly in the 20's. But. a lot of those grunts included a split second of a high tone and numbers that jumped from the 50's to the 80's, just for a split second. Is there something good down there. This machine is extremely sensitive. Is it reading a blip of iron as a good target just for a split second or is it trying to tell me "There's a button down there you dummie" I'm used to nails, etc. nulling out on my other detectors. And used to that solid repeatable tone. What am I hearing with the G2?

Thanks guys, willie:shrug:

Hey Willie,
You may be hearing both good and bad when you hear that grunt and squeal. I run my disc a little higher, usually around 50. I hunt fairly slowly, especially in iron. If I get one of those weak, quick, spikes of sound, I go back over it with short, quick strokes. If I can tease it into a repeatable signal I dig it. We get so used to hearing the booming signals that we have trouble getting excited about those faint ones. A faint, repeatable, especially one that gives a high and consistent vdi is well worth going after. I admit, I dig some junk but I pull a lot of neat stuff out of the iron. I like to hunt with the big coil to id the iron areas. I hit them hard outside the main iron field then come back with the 5 inch coil and wade right into the worst of the iron. Let us know how you are getting along, but trust your instincts with the G2 it is a good machine.

Thats exactly the type of hunting the G2 is made for with the 5 inch coil I perfer to here the grunts set disc. at 45 .When you get a high tone hit sweep at different angles for a two way signal VDI numbers will be corupted some what in nails dig if you find a nail double check your hole I found two or three nails only unveil a nice coin in the same hole.If you can handle the grunts coins will pop through ocasionaly, you will dig nails to especialy bulged and large heads like roof nails but Ive dug some indian heads and a v nickle, wheaties to this summer where other machines have missed,I love my g2 also for micro jewery.CEDARSWAMP

I love mine too. It is a detector that truly lived up to all of the hype and works just exactly like I hoped it would.

Listen and see if you can get a repeatable good signal out of it. If its erratic and moves around its almost always junk.
