G2 OR OMEGA 8000

READY TO PULL THE TRIGGER ON ONE OF THESE BABIES BUT NOT TOTALLY SURE. I'M LEANING TOWARDS THE OMEGA BUT THE G2 SOUNDS PRETTY GOOD AS WELL. I HAVE READ MONTE'S POST ABOUT THE G2 AND HE SAYS IT IS NOT A DEPTH MONSTER BUT ON THE OTHER HAND SOME ARE SAYING THEY ARE PRETTY DEEP. THE REVIEW FROM MARK ELLINGTON SOUNDS VERY POSITIVE. SILVER DIME AT 8'
I HUNT MOSTLY PLOWED FIELDS AND WOULD LIKE TO HUNT MORE OLD FOUNDATIONS. ANY OF YOU GUYS HUNTING WITH THE G2 IN FIELDS AND HOW ARE THEY PERFORMING.

THANK YOU IN ADVANCE FOR YOUR HELP,

JIM

I think the Omega would be better for silver and the G2 better for gold or brass... get one then the other when you can. The share some coils, maybe all.

Thanks Julien: That does make sense but I had read in one article that frequency doesn't matter much with the new technology. So I didn't know if that would apply here. Thanks again!

If you are hunting hammered silvers then I'd say the G2. I have an Omega and have dug a few hammereds and they hit fine with the omega, but the higher frequency G2 will hit them harder. Look at the detectors that are popular in the fields on hammereds - XP's, F75, T2, etc.

If you are hunting coins in general (like me) I'd go Omega hands down. I had the T2 and the Omega just does better on coins in general, even in iron (consistently.). The depth I get with the Omega (4" - 6" consistently) is great and the targets hit hard for the most part so I know I can get bigger coins much deeper than the typical dime sized coppers I dig. Silver hits VERY well. I've dug a large silver hammered at 7" and a small one at about the same (very faint signal on the later.)

Thank you, that gets me closer to make the decision. I would love to hit a hammered coin but in Western Mass that may be a though one. I have hit cut silver and Cobb's but I wonder how the G2 would do on a Large cent.

Thanks

I've been looking at the G2 and the Omega 8000 myself.

Which one would be / is good for gold rings in the nickel to pull tab range out of these ?

At the moment I own a Fisher F5, it's a nickel hog, can that be said for the G2 and the Omega as well ? So, which one would be ideal for hunting for gold rings on land ?

With the F5 I've found 5 gold rings, before that I used the F4 which has not found a gold ring for me (strange).

I've read Monte's posts here and also posts from another person called Mike (the F5 guru), both have said great things about the F5 and the Omega.

Since the G2 is so new, feedback on it's abillity to find gold rings what I am looking for, as with the Omega too.

I'm still looking at the Omega, but that could change based on reports / reviews of the G2.

I've never owned a Teknetics machine but I do now. Had my G-2 a week and have found 1 small gold charm that was a good 7 inchs deep. I had it in disc. 40 sensitivity around 90 TID was hard on 53. I have found several coins and it has no problem with silver dimes, wheats or the clad coins. I have'nt been relic hunting with it yet but did test it on some buttons and plates I have and the G-2 had no problems. It is very quiet light ( 2lbs8ozs) with the battery and the pistol grip is very comfortable. Just got maybe 4hrs on it but I really like it. Going to a couple of campsites tommorrow and will see how it does in AM. I have used T-2s and F-75s my friends have but they are not as quiet but I'll see tommorrow how it does against my son's V3i and my buddy's F-75LTD.

First, I note that your post omitted a comment about which make or model detector you currently own, or which you've used recently, and I think that is important to know when someone is seeking advise.

If you presently have a detector, what performance do you want to gain from adding one of these two models?

Okay, so tell us what interests you about the Omega? Since I switched over to using the Teknetics Omega 8000 I have sold off most of my other detectors (like an MXT and XLT), and I've steadily been trimming back how much time I use my T2. The Omega, once learned, is just a very versatile coin hunting unit that appeals to me and many others. Now, what appeals to you about the Omega?

Yes, and when I, or anyone else, makes a reference to "depth" it should be based on something. All too often I read reports on a model used, especially a new model just introduced, where a poster states the new unit gets great depth, even on par with a top-end model from that manufacturer or others. I think that if I were to review my G2 Evaluation post from the 30th of October, I made certain to remind readers that the G2, and sort-of-twin brother the new Fisher Gold Bug, were designed to compete with the gold nugget market by providing a multi-purpose detector. Not just an All Metal model only gold seeker, like the original Gold Bug or Gold Bug II or Diablo

If fields and relics are what you ate after low conductors buttons bullets and such the G2 is the way to go. If you are a park and coin hu ter the omega I would think would be the way to go.

I love both machines but for relic hunting where coins could be hiding I would grab my G2 first.

Want to thank all you guys for your input, Also, Monte really like to read your posts and adding the information about the frequencies helps.I have hunted mostly with Whites detectors and currently have an XLT, and Bandido Umax. The Teknetic machines seem to be moving ahead with the Technology and being lightweight is a real bonus for me. This is a great forum, I just wish this was around 20-30 years ago:)

I know what you mean. People talk about they miss the "good lod days", well I got to the party late too. I started this hobby in the early 90s BUT... it is still great and I don't know but what it isn't as much fun to pull masked targets from heavily hunted places as it must have been to hunt the easy silver etc. it is exciting and rewarding either way I guess.

BTW, I think you are using two of Monte's favorite machines there, the Bandito and XLT. How do you like them ?

Julien

Hey Julien:

Love the XLT but Whites has to lose the heavy box. I have hunted with Whites since the early eighties starting with the old TR machines. They work great but this year I ended up with tennis elbow. Got a shot and things are good now. I have also had the Fisher Quick Silver. Awesome machine with excellent depth. I used the Umax the other day and found a tiny button at a depth I couldn't believe. It's a neat detector but I miss having the ID and plus the ground balance knob can move too easy if you bump it. Also, wish we had the Internet years ago.

Jim

or Omega can make a great compliment to an avid XLT users detector battery. I've been fond of the XLT since I got one at their release in early '94, but while they do great in more open areas for 'cruising,' they aren't the pick for trashy sites. Working in and around jun k and tight brushy confines or a lot of building rubble calls for a slow-motion, quick-response/fast-recovery detector.

I like both the G2 and Omega, but find myself grabbing the G2 more often as the sites I select are more challenging. Comfort is important to me partly due to age, but mainly due to crappy health. I have degenerative disk disease and degenerative back disease, a sluggish shoulder, and those bother me more in the long run than the four mending broken ribs. I still enjoy using the XLT, but I usually don't use the 950 coil. I prefer a thin-profile 8" coil or the 6

Hey Thanks Monte: I had back surgery 2 years ago so I know what your going through. So you can relate to my elbow and back as well. That's why I want something light to swing but has good performance. I use the 6" loop more with the XLT and I have the 8" as well but the 6" is a killer combo,I think! My little Bandido is a cool little machine but I really want the ID. Good luck hunting and thanks again.

Jim

I've been getting around with a cane for 17 years now, with a brief exception being after I had back surgery in July of '95. L5-S1 herniated disk. For a year or two following I seldom needed the cane, but times have changed. :detecting: I think that's a cane in the left hand, not a recovery shovel. :)

Yes, the XLT with the 6
