Funny looking V-Nickel,

Old California

New member
Here's something I picked up last night at an old site, Funny shaped V-Nickel.

The location is an old stage stop which started in 1858 and later continued as a settlement up to the early 1900's which accounts for some coins we sometimes pull from that era.

A friend and I left late in the early evening after work to the old site knowing we would be detecting only a few hours hoping to capture a seated or something old before night fell upon us and trying to beat a storm with high possibility of snow, We couldn't avoid the darkness but we did beat the storm and with the cool wind around us our water bottles did freeze.

One of the finds was a V-Nickel shaped into a bowl, At the time when I recovered the target I didn't know what it was until this morning when going through the finds.

Other than that, The other targets recovered are commonly found here only this trip didn't give up an old seated or other earlier coins from the Stage stop era, Most of the horse shoes coiming out of this site with nails attached are almost always square nails.

Still, A fun trip and good exercise which I am suffering from at the present moment.

Pocket knife,
Some iron finds,
One Henry shell,
Smashed musket ball,
Bowl shaped V-Nickel,
Remains of a Harmonic,
Several percussion caps,
Two 2 and 3 ringer smashed bullets,
A few horseshoes with square nails attached,

Any idea why the V-Nickel was transformed into a bowl shaped object will be greatly appreciated,
HH, Paul

Great pictures OC!

Love that collection of iron.

That nickel is intriguing.

Now I really can say I've seen a 'plugged nickel'

Do you recall that old saying? "I wouldn't give a plugged nickel"

On closer examination, is there any evidence of it having been a button?

Can I see some sign of an attachment mark inside the center of the bowl?

Re-check its VDI reading against a nickle of that era. That may prove something.

The shape looks manufactured to me.
No bullet hit could create such a perfectly formed item ????

"Keep those reports a'comin', 'cause they've got 'atmosphere'"...

I could almost feel the cold, and taste the snow in the air....MattR.UK

Here's a couple of pics after giving her a bath. After cleaning up the bowl shaped v-nickel, it has a perfectly centered hole.

And it does appear to have been pressed with some sort of device manufacturing the coin into something else? Like Matt and Eddie said, it may be a button missing the hook or may even be in the starting stages of a coin ring as Dick stated?

Still, A nice conversational piece to share with family and friends.

Thanks again,
Paul (Ca)

Thanks Bill,

I've been using your ID Edge this week, For a small detector it sure gets excellent depth!

And operates well at older areas laced with iron, If the target is there the Edge will get it.

Thanks again,
Paul (Ca)

Nice find Paul. I am going to try the settings that Bill Lad uses on the T2 and see what I can find. Sorry we won't be able to go to China Town till spring but this way the owners won't be wondering if they should be the ones detecting.

We let things cool off and then go back in fresh. If you do come up this way let me know?

The Edge is really no slouch, and like I said I have no fears about packing it in my backpack & finding a killer spot deep in the woods. I had my best field test "finds wise" with that one. It will hunt alongside the top detectors @ twice the price.....maybe even best 'em in iron.....
Glad you like it too,
HH, Bill
