Fun Little Hunt

Well I have been waiting on the rain and finally we got it!! I was going to head up to an old park, but I started talking to the part timer that works for me. She said the house she lived in with her sister was built in 1905 and I could come detect her yard. I am always up for a new spot "especially private ground". They had a small front yard with about a 5 foot wide strip that went around the side of the house.. So I strapped on the X-8 and went to work :detecting: Right away I was finding wheat pennies.. Then the neighbour kids all decided to come over and watch. Usually I would be little unhappy, but they stayed a distance and just watched.. I would toss them the clad pennies as well as the marbles I was finding in the holes.. They were having fun and so was I lol I ended up finding 9 wheat pennies.. I even had some early ones. I think one was 1911.. I did find a neat button with P.O.D stamped on it. I don't know much about buttons so hopefully one of you nice guys can help me out  The coolest find to me was this charm I found from the Pittsburgh Steel Company.. It was pretty deep so I think it has some age to it.. But it reads on the front. "The Weld That Held". I thought it was a neat little item.. Well anyways, thanks for looking everyone!
Happy Hunting

You found an old Post Office Department Button, late1800's, early 1900's Time frame. That is a very nice button. HH...Jesse.

Neat finds! That's a nice early post office button and that Pittsburgh charm was probably used as a watch fob. I've seen similar ones like that and they date from 1890s to early 1900s. You may be able to date it from the spelling of Pittsburgh which was Pittsburg (without the h) from 1891-1911 (although a lot of the local people and companies resisted this change and still spelled it with the the h). That's a good idea about giving the kids the memorial pennies you find - anything is a treasure to them and they may get an interest in the hobby. HH

Congratulations Darrell! Thanks for the story and the pictures!

Nice Finds Derrell ! I really like that P.O.D. button especially, its a treasure.... I have been a Letter Carrier for 21 years, and am from a five generation Post Office family so far, (one of my daughters recently took the postal exam ) Started with my great-great grandmother becoming the first Postmistress in our families hometown. When she was Postmistress, mail was still delivered by stagecoach here. BSC

Nice Post Office Department button you found Derrell! I got one like it last year. It still had the shank, but it popped off while I was brushing off the dirt at home. Great set of charms too. I love finding stuff like that.

Hey "D"
I am getting out to an old cabin in the mountain tommorow and am hopeing for a cooler mountian spot to hunt. It is an 1890s cabin and sits not far from some water. I hope to find a few good things and basicaly beat the heat. I have been on too many projects with full sun and NO shade. I have lots of wheaties to show for my few times out hunting and not much else as I have not had alot of time in my favorite spots this summer. But I have some plans.

Cant wait to see what you dig up next.
good luck
