Fun hunt in a sloppy field...

I hit an old home site that is on my 1860 maps but is gone on the 1873 maps. I love these kind of sites. Usually everything is old and not much modern trash to deal with. This was the case Sunday. It took me a while to actually find some iron concentrated in one area. It ended up being right next to where I parked but further out in the field. Luck was with me as I found these three goodies in about the first five passes. Then things got slow. I did find three buttons, a wheat cent and a CW store card that is too corroded to read.

The half dime is only my third in nearly 13 years of detecting! It is in the best shape of the three (one is holed the other got driven over for 100+ years). That dig was the epitome of metal detecting. The signal was in the IH coin range. Raised the coil - seemed to be the right size. Dug a small plug, split it open to reveal a silver reeded edge. "What is that?!!", was my first thought. I knew it was good. With a little spit and melted snow I carefully removed the stuck on dirt. What a thrill! This is why we detect!

The more corroded token is also from the bank of Canada. It is an "Un Sou" or Thistle Token.

Take care and HH - BF

Nice half dime! the two tokens are great also. Congrats.

Very nice! I've never found a half dime and not sure I've ever seen one in person.

I hunted a field close by that an 1860's map showed had a house on it but was long gone. Its now a corn field. When I asked permission the old guy told me there was never a house on that site. I showed him shards of china I picked up etc and he was pretty stunned. In any event I did find a large cent (have found several of those - the XS is a beast on them!) right by the road and a couple relics. However, the best of all was a silver 3 cent piece. My one and only of those! You are right, it was thrilling and that's why we do this.

Thanks Xp,
Yea, the old, long gone sites usually give up a few real keepers. For some reason, I have found four or five 3 cent silver pieces but not so lucky with the half dimes. Maybe this is the start of change in luck on them. Now to start working on those gold coins!

Really nice finds - especially that half dime. The Canadian tokens are proof that these items circulated in the US, especially in the states bordering Canada. They probably stopped using them in the US when the Coinage Act of 1857 issued which forbade the use of foreign silver and gold coins. My guess is that foreign copper coins circulated a little longer. Neat & historic finds - way to go!

Very nice hunting day!! Hope next year brings you many more!!
