Full gain

I'm getting the feeling lately that not everyone sets their MXT to full gain in areas where there's no interference. I get around 2 additional inches when cranked all the way. Any non-full gain people out there?

You very are fortunate to have ground that allows you to do that.

In my area I can't get past 2 with wobble so I run at 10 in most areas.

I am usually in the +1 to +2 range, the +3 usually is a little to much to listen to.

I usely can't run mine over 1 or 2 at the most here in Missouri also .

Most of the ground I hunt will let me run at full gain or close to it with the 6X10 coil.

I run my MXT at 9 to 10, just above pre-set.
How do you tell when you are running to high??

I find if I run to high, it'll drive you bonkers with all of the sounds and displays. It seems to sensitive. I am still some what new to the MXT so maybe there is more to it. :beers:

For me the gain is too high when I get false signals or when the threshold sounds weird

Hey HuntinDog. As Topo pointed out, you can tell the gain is set too high when you are getting falsing in the discriminate mode. The MXT's audio is giving audible responses in a mixed mode (2 at once). That is, it's giving responses in an all-metal mode AND a discriminate mode simultaneously. Some roughness in the threshold coming from the all-metal portion is fine, what you don't want is any falsing coming from the discriminate portion of the audio. To check this, after first properly ground balancing the machine, flip to relic mode and listen for any erroneous high tones. If there's any then turn your gain down just enough to eliminate them. You are now at maximum gain for that particular area. You can then switch back to another search mode or stay in relic mode. If I can max the gain after doing this, I often look to put on a bigger coil if the hunt warrants it. This information was pulled directly from "The MXT Edge" book and if I've explained it confusingly, refer to the book. Once I learned this I started to get considerably better performance out of my machine and coils. Knowledge is confidence. Hope that helps.

Thanks srf2112
I hunt in Relic and that is pretty much how I set up the MXT.
9 to 10 seems to be where I land most of the time.
I just wasn't sure if I was missing something on the setup.
