Frustrated

I am getting to the point of not knowing what to do. I am in my second year with my Explorer II, I have read Andy's book from cover to cover three times. I have read just about every post on different settings and tried them. Some days I think I have it figured out and then other days it just plain drives me crazy, all the sounds and diggin what I think are silver signals only to find nails. I go back to the factory pre sets as many suggest one should learn this machine on, and I am able to get plenty of shallow clad, but not much deep stuff. I came from a Whites M6 which was a pretty straight forward machine, but I always got beat by Minelab owners, so I made the plunge. I have done the homework and the practice, but I am not sure its clicking, as the guys in my club with the Ace 250 seem to be beating me. I know its not about competition, but I just want to feel comfortable with what I am doing, and do not want to give up. Any suggestions would be appreciated. I know this hobby is supposed to be fun.

Thanks

Steve

leaving it in the factory presets...but I will tell you this with 100% confidence.

If you aren't digging much deep stuff in the presets...then the coil just hasn't passed over it yet.:beers:

The explorers will hit 8"+ coins with no problem right out of the box...in the factory preset settings.

Don't give up.

So Bryce, when does one know to make a switch from factory pre sets, I know the answer is subjective. it seems that I can hunt for a couple of hours with a deep siver setting and then by afternoon I have had enough and switch back to factory pre sets. Does this sound weird or am I just confusing myself by switching back and forth.

If you're hunting in conductive sounds...and are digging too many nails...close the screen some.

I hunt with my iron mask at 22 on the SE,,,,6 on the EX2 (equivilant to 22 on SE)

If I open it up even one notch...I start digging too much iron.

I would mess around with that a little.

Maybe I am just expecting too much, I will keep at it, I think I just might stay in factory presets a bit longer. Thanks Bryce for your help.

You mentioned other Explorer users in your area, I would suggest try
getting with one of them on a hunt and let them mark a good deep one
and then let you listen to it.
Those nail chirps don't sound quite as good as a deep high conductive coin.
One other thing, if you get a signal that you are considering to dig, use pinpoint
to make sure it agrees with the center in standard mode.
You could be getting a nail false off the side of coil and thinking it is good.
Wiggle on a signal and see if it repeats.

Hi Steve which coil do you use on your Explorer, and have you tried any of the smaller or larger coils. Les.

Also I would recommend that you plant a small coin garden if you don't have one or find someone who has one and run your machine over it again and again ...... and as you do that, just listen to the sounds, watch the cursor, adjust the settings, and experiment .:detecting:...... you will get a good education in a hurry.... It really helped me a lot.. Good Luck .... Bill

I agree with Steve(MS) and also Bill67 good advise from both you guys,so now you know what to do Steve ,and good luck with your new SEF coil. Keep on tectin and I am sure it will all come together soon.

Well here is what I did, I went to a semi older school yard yesterday, put my machine in factory presets and cranked up the sensitivity to manual 25. It was a much better day and I felt much more comfortable. I found 2.03 in modern clad, 3 wheaties, two buttons, and one pendant ( not gold or silver). I think I was trying too many different settings before and not just becoming comfortable with the sounds. I am going to leave it here for a while and see where it takes me. Thanks all for the help, as I was really close to giving it up and going to another detector.

Steve

Steve, I think you will get the hang of it,
be persistent, take your time and dig
a lot just out of curiosity to find out
what it's telling you, go mostly by what
the audio portion is but check your screen
at the same time.
For now try easier sites then when you
gain confidence, you can dive into some
of those more challenging sites.

I also went from a Whites M6 to an Explorer XS(same machine as II).I hunted with Explorer users who certainly helped me transition.I did find the Explorer is a pretty straight forward machine, the richness and variety of sounds is far greater, but a solid ,repeatable signal is usually a good target on both machines. With experience you will usually be able to Iron from a coin and trash by how that high tone sounds, hard to describe but you can tell.Do not set your Sens. too high at first to reduce falsing.I set mine at 21-22 with stock 24-25 with the X-8.I hunt in IM -6,Conduct,deep and fast off, gain at 8.I find plenty of good stuff with these settings.I will tell my silver coin count went up dramatically going from the M6 to the Explorer.Keep at it and I know you will glad you switched.HH
