FRUSTRATED-Tabs reading as nickels on my cz70

Anyone please provide me with some input on your experiences with how nickels read on your cz7 or cz70. I don't usually even mess with nickel readings when hunting as I usually an shooting for silver. The last two times however I decided to try for some nickel readings. I had SEVENTEEN SOLID nickel hits that did not budge from the nickel notch on my cz70. They were strong and dead on the nickel notch. I dug them all...and each one was a broken pull tab. Not the round part...but the long end of it. Is this common with anyone else? I have not found a nickel yet with my cz70. I hunted with a White's for the first 15 years and have used a cz7 for the last 12 years. I have had my cz70 for a month or so now. Please let me know of your experiences.

I've used Quattros, Xterras, Garretts, and all the CZ's + Coinstrike and square pulltabs fall in the nickel range with all of them. But then again, so does some gold targets also. I think folks can tell the subtle difference in the tones between nickel & pulltab, but I aint one of them. If I hunt for nickels, I dig pulltabs. Now, I there is a nickel-round pulltabe or foil bounce I will dig it as well just in case it might be a ring.

Hi Mike.
If I notch out both round AND square tabs...why are they showing up as a nickel which is clear up by coins on my notch system as I'm sure you know? Because they were all broken in half possibly?

have you tried notching out nickels also and see if you get a hit on pulltabs still?

I find that shreaded aluminum cans that are about the size of a coin will also hit as nickel on most machines that I have used. You just have to be careful on machines with notching that you don't notch out gold like jewery and such. Because you could be diggin battery money while the guy next to you is diggin gold rings. I think the most productive detectorist runs with little to no discrimination and digs probably 99% of their targets. But I on the other hand aren't that fond of diggin. So I tend to run more discrimination and dig less.

CZ70 is an excellent machine and a real nickel getter, but like I said in order to get nickels, you have to dig pulltabs. But this isn't just with the CZ70, it's the same thing with the CZ5, CZ3d, Coinstrike, Garrett GT&i1500, Cortes just to mention a few.

Now, if you feel that there might be a problem with your CZ, you can opt to send it in for a checkup.

Unfortunately it appears you have a tab in your area that will read nickle on any machine. Depending where I am hunting some days 9 out of 10 is a nickle and other days I dig lots of junk and few nickles..
Along with the foil from water bottles that reads just like a nice gold ring some of the newer tabs can really confuse anyone..Seems like they are making the machines better and also giving us more junk to contend with. Nothing wrong with your unit just another pitfall of the hobby.

I went through a 20 foot section at an old fairgrounds I have hunted since 1979. Every foot was a solid nickel hit. I could barely move the loop without hitting one. After digging close to 20 of them I gave up as each was the long end bottom half of a round pulltaband not a nickel. I had notched out round tabs, iron and foil...leaving high coins and also notched in the old square (now relic) icon. After over 20 nickel hits that weren't nickels I got a nice high pitched high coin tick and it was a barber at 8"...nice reward.
I just went out to my test garden where I have buffalo and v nickels buried at 6" and my cz70 did read right on nickel. Do you think if I went back to the tab patch at the fairgrounds and this time notched out the square tab-relic icon that it might make a difference and block out the tabs reading perfectly as a nickel?

Those 'beaver tails' fool most detectors and sound real sweet to a CZ. I've tried every trick known to man to disc them out with a CZ without any success.

Be aware the the proper order of conductivity is Iron, Foil, Nickel, Round Tab, Square Tab, Zinc, High Coin. CZ's have the meter changed slightly to move the Nickel segment over to the coins. I.E., look at an older analog White's detector, with a meter, and you should see the Nickels are down near the junk, not the coins.

Targets that I have found that will give good Nickel hits, or Nickel/Foil bounces (like corroded Buff's, V Nickels, etc), but are not actually Nickels, are beavertails (the long piece you are having a problem with), broken pulltabs (being broken lower the conductivity of the target down to the Nickel range), large pieces of Foil, pencil eraser tips, small pieces of shredded aluminum cans, etc. Sometimes even INTACT "square" tabs, like the newer Pepsi tabs, will come in solid Nickel. This has to do with conductivity of the target, and there's not really anything you can do to disc. these targets out and still recover Nickels.

I also run with NO Discrimination, as I want to hear all the tones. I just mentally discriminate the targets, based on sound, depth, size, etc., and dig what I feel is a good target.

Sometimes you just have to knuckle down and dig a lot of trash to get the goodies.

Thanks for the input. At least I know I'm not going crazy or doing anything wrong. Just gotta keep diggin'. Now I know it happens to you guys as well! Take care
