Front yards or back yards?

Well-known member
I've only been detecting for a few months, but surprisingly about 90% of my better finds from old homesites have been from the front yards. Even though I've done more square footage in back yards.

My instinct tells me this is just a short term aberration since back yards are logical places for clothes lines, kids playing, family gatherings, dumps, outhouses, etc.

So my question for the wise elders who have been MDing old homesites for years: Have you found more good finds in front yards or back?

Just big front yards and side yards.... Back yards were for crops and fields almost up to the back door.
Modern day farmers started using back yards at a much later date.....

There is NO telling when and where and object of value may show up. I used to ride a bike to where I would detect and have found, on the side of the road, a $100 bill, a new: hammer, vise grips, all kinds of tools, a spill of 5-$1 bills. While turning my detector on at a school, I looked down at 2-$20 bills folded. I found a checkbook holder w/no name with 3-$5 and 3-$1 bill in it at a fairground in a neighboring city. Many families have higher traffic in their front yard-but there are other families who bbq, garden(as my dad did), or have other activities in their back yard. After finding out the number of coins AWAY from the school playgrounds, etc, I got off the patterns program several years ago. As Charles Garrett said, "I am truly amazed at the places that treasures show up". :smoke:

To clarify on the backyards, in my case I'm talking about urban old homesites that were built around the turn of the century (1900) give or take a few years. They were not built or ever used as farmhouses and do have both front and back yards. I was just wondering if anybody else has noticed a pronounced difference in finds between front and back yards of old urban houses that were not originally farmhouses.

I am new to detecting also, but I can tell you that the 20 plus old house's that I have detected around in my Town. All of the good finds have came from the front yard area, mainly around the side walks in front of the houses. My house was built in 1905 and I have found two barber dimes and a merc, and just tonight found a 1897 IH in my front yard.Good luck and HH--Kurt

When someone is most likely to have something of value on them
is when they are going somewhere or coming back.

When the leave, they are fidegiting and putting their hands in their
pockets while trying to beat a kids or someting.

When they get home, they let all hang out (fall-out). Make repeated
trips to the wagon retreaving and loosing stuff.

But not all households are the same.

Happy Hunting

In my limited experience the front yaeds have paid off better for me? I have found stuff all over the place though, Beale.
