from the dirt of the over hunted park

I have been hunting an old swimming pool area in our town. There have been four or five guys, including me, that have been detecting there in recent months. Until today, its been clad, clad, clad.

In four previous hunts, I managed one ladies silver ring and a wheatie or two, and one Buffalo nickel. Today was a little better. Clad, of course, but also a Merc and three wheaties. I am hoping to hit this place again tomorrow. Like they say, the place is never hunted out. We will see.... :)

VDI on the dime was 89-90, wheaties 79-80.

Nice Merc and wheats. That's a very high VDI on the dime, but a definite winner for sure.

Have to agree, very high VDI on the dime. Mine is normally 81-82 but maybe that's the difference between the clads I pull up and the silver you show here.

The VDI seemed high, I was hoping for a larger silver coin. Happy with the dime. I am starting to pay less attention to the VDI and more attention to the tone. The AT Pro is a complex machine, I am still learning how it talks to me. I bought this machine in June, I have gone through 6 sets of batteries in it and about 4 9v batteries in my Pro Pointer.

I have learned a few things...
If it chatters and VDI is 75-77, it IS a screw cap...
If VDI stays at 80, but you cannot pinpoint it to a small area...It IS a deep Soda can
If VDI is 40-45 and not crisp, it IS foil
If VDI is 52-57 and crackly, it IS a pulltab
Rusted screwcaps still drive me nuts though...

HH,

I whole heartedly agree with you, your VDI numbers are about spot on with mine. I am amazed at how many times I have not trusted the machine and dug a piece of foil or junk. But, there is always that ONE time.... :)

I tend to evaluate a dig, it depends on where I am and just how much trash is known to be in the ground. I routinely compare the sound vs. the meter, I am trying to train myself to listen to the sound more, I know that can be more important than the VDI numbers.

Thanks for sharing your notes on VDIs & tones. I added them to my notes and think it'll shorten my learning curve a bit when I get my machine back from Garrett (is it here yet???) William
