From gravel to Gorgeous, cut Sapphires and garnets

DOC

Some time back, I was the fortunate recpient of a bag of gravel from Allen in Montana. It was a very kind and generous thing for him to do. But those of you who know Allen already know that this is his nature.

He sent me a bag, after he had been by my office and I had marveled at some of the beautiful cut sapphires he had in his collection. These were all sapphires he had found and had cut.

Well let me tell you, I had a blast sitting and sorting through that gravel on my light table. Each scoop of gravel seemed to hold many little and sometimes a chunk of translucent stone. Now to be real honest, I really wasn't quite sure what I was looking for so I just picked out anything I could see the light shining through. The opaque looking rocks, were just that, rocks.

After I had posted the pictures of the raw sapphires and garnets on this forum some time ago, Reno Chris, generously offered to send them along with a batch of his own sapphires to Sri Lanka to someone who would facet them. Chris said he had been doing business with this person for a while and found them trustworthy to do a good job, however, it usually took months for the job to be completed.

Well about a week ago Chris returned my little collection of rocks to me all faceted and polished. It really blew my mind to see how pretty these little pieces of gravel turned out.

Here's a picture, as you probably already know the red ones are garnets.

Take care!

Those sure are pretty Doc. But I have no frame of reference like I have gold. What kind of value do they have? Are any particular color more valuable than another? Do size and quality matter like diamonds?

I think most of us are familiar with the blue and star sapphires commonly found in jewelry stores but what is the deal with these?

Also, what does it cost to have a handful like these sent to Sri Lanka to be cut and polished? And then what? Can you sell them? Who to?

Questions, questions...

Nice stones Doc ! It kinda gets in ones blood after awhile, I keep going back hoping for another big find like a couple of years ago when I got the nice blue on that cut to a 3.23 emerald cut which I got $2000.00 for. Now all you have to do is start looking for that gold nugget with the divot or hole in it to mount one of the stones. I look for that special ring at the pawn shops that maybe have alot of little diamond chips or missing a diamond or thre black hills gold rings with a perle that can be replaces with a sapphire.
glad you enjoy them

I actually don't have a clue as to what they are worth or anything. Chris said that the lot I sent to him that he sent to Sri Lanka would have cost about $35 to have faceted.

Beyond that I have no frame of reference either. I am sure certain colors are more desirable than others and I am also sure that just like diamonds, the quality and clarity of the gem has a lot to do with its value.

However, I don't know what top grade 1 carat sapphire would cost compated to a 1 carat top grade diamond.

Allen probably knows the answers to all of your questions and much more, perhaps he'll give us an education.

Take care!
