I was able to sneak out for a few minutes before work today. Lately, this seems to be all the hunting time I get. I headed off to an area I've been hunting lately, the site of the old zoo in town. Now, it's a sledding hill. I have found a few Wheat's, and a silver quarter there earlier this year. I started trying to find where a "hot spot" might be, as the area is pretty big. I think I'm just going to have to start gridding it off and digging all sorts of targets.
I got one signal, an indicated Nickel at an approximate depth of about 4". Since I've found Wheat's at that depth here before, and it signaled a "Nickel", I decided to go for it. I flipped open a plug, scanned, target's in the hole. I scanned the hole with my Vibraprobe, and got a hit at about 6 o'clock. I flipped out a divot of dirt and exposed the setting for a ring. Since it was a "Nickel" hit, I knew I had gold. I started gently cleaning the ring off, when I suddenly realized I had my first class ring in my hand.

It's a girl's ring, not sure on the size, 10K, dated 1973, from a local HS. I can make out the initials "PW" on the top of the ring. Looks like I've got some researching to do, to see if I can return it to the lady. My work's cut out for me, though, as she's old enough to be my mother (I was born the year she graduated), and who knows if she's gotten married, moved away from the area, etc.
I continued hunting, and recovered a Wheat, a '40, at about 4" in depth. A short while later, about 6' away from the Wheat, I got a High Coin Signal at an indicated 2 - 3" down. I cut a plug, and scanned the plug. Target's in the hole. I scooped out the loose dirt and exposed the rim and part of the surface of a large silver coin. I knew it was silver from the color, but my mind did not immediately recognize the design. I thought I had a SLQ. Imagine my surprise when I flipped the coin out of the dirt and realized I had a Walking Lib Half!

What's really funny, is in the past year, I've found 3 Walking Lib's, all from this same park (it's a BIG park), and two of them are dated 1934! They are both in about the same condition, but this new one doesn't have the crusty green crud from a Wheat laying against it.
