Fresh Water Lake Hunting - Questions???

JohnEdmonton and others,

I have followed your posts now for at least 8 months and have to say that your posts and success with water metal detecting has kept me going. I was hunting our salt water beaches with a high end detector without much luck except for finding penny's. Your success at finding rings and more at fresh water beach's made me realize that there has to be something at our beaches. I put my highly computerized detector away and brought out the big gun! My Garret Infinium has helped me dig up 4 gold rings, 3 silver rings, bracelets, neck chains, watches and not to mention enough change to pay for the HST on my coffees.

John and others, I have just started to visit some fresh water lakes and I was wondering, with all that you have found, how far into the water did you have to wade. Do you use a drysuit/wetsuit or hip waders? Or did you find most of your rings on the beach?

Thanks,
RK

I use a wetsuit, to get as deep as I can. When the water is up to my neck, it gets a little difficult getting the sand scoop into the sand, but some jumping up and down several times seems to help. It must look like a shark attack from shore. If the water is too cold or only up to my waist, I usually just wear a pair of chest waders. Most of my rings, in the lakes at least come in the shallow water, at about waist level and at or above the nipple line. For the shallow water, I use my AT Pro, as it has such good discrimination capabilities both audio and digital number readouts.

Good luck. Some people will tell you that PI's do not work well in freshwater lakes. That is simply not true. Go out and have some fun. ;)

There is so much iron from the logging days here in Michigan , cans , nails, fish hooks and anything else you can think of. I was TOLD that a PI machine would drive me crazy. I tell others the same thing. Am I wrong about the Infinium? I know your the resident expert and have totally enjoyed your finds. Thank you for your input. The old iron in Lake Huron sometimes has my CZ thinking I have a good target.

PI's work great in freswater. I would not use anything else.
