Fresh water detector advice

I am debating which detector would be best for shallow lake detecting. I will be using it most in water of about 4 to 5 feet this coming summer. I see alot of nice posts of the tiger shark . I have a Fisher F2 that I love and use for land detecting and was wondering if Fisher"s water detectors were as good? Or something else in the $800 price range. I want something that is easy to use, durable going across the lake in a boat and good at finding gold chains and rings in fresh water. I need it to be a good detector for the beach areas where I anchor and detect. Any suggestions are appreciated.

yep the Tiger Shark is great! i also had a few Fisher 1280X's and they are good.i like the TS better because you can change coils where the 1280x is hard wired, also the TS will find small gold earing studs the 1280 wont...and the life time warranty of the TS is tops!

The TS will get the small goodies in fresh water. I also have an Excal 2, and the TS will hit on small gold that the excal is completely oblivious to. I don't think you could get a more sensitive fresh water machine. I have both the 8" and 10" coils, and it is hard to beat the coverage of the 10, they are both concentric, so be sure and overlap at least 50% on your swings, that way if you do go over something tiny you won't miss it. The attached photo is of things found in the water with the TS, that the Excal 2 WILL NOT hit on, even the hoop earrings!! You would think they would come in loud and clear, but with no descrim, you can move them all around the coil and then lay them together on the coil, in the closed position, and nothing. In all fairness though, they only weigh 4.7 GRAINS each, and the silver chain 21.6 Grains... HH Joe

Thanks sooo much for the response!!!!!!! I think the Tiger Shark is in my future for this summer. Is it easy to use like the Fisher F2???? This past summer was my first summer with a real quality metal detector and bought the Fisher F2 by monitoring this forum. What a Great and easy detector to use. I had an old detector, a Jetco Treasure Hawk that I played with without much success. I haven't found anything valuable yet with the F2 but I have found a bunch of clad totaling at least $10.00 on the golf course which I live on. I got it in September so I think I did pretty well for a month of detecting in Michigan. Can't wait for this summer since I lost a gold chain and pendant in a local favorite boating swimming area. I might not find my stuff but with all the people and boats that frequent the lake and area, I think I should do pretty well with a quality detector and a little bit of experience.

thanks for posting Joe i"v been looking for a detector that hits small gold in the water

That's odd. I have an Excal 1000 ( not the II ) and have been using it on the beaches here in NJ and come to think of it, haven't found much, if any silver with it. My silver killer, ironically, is my HH Wader with the 8 inch coil.

My Excal has found me several pieces of gold, one a nice heart shaped pendant with diamonds, but not hitting on that silver chain is interesting. I always like finding the old silver coins.

It would not do it... HH Joe

It is easy to use, hunt with the descrim all the way down for a bit, and if you start digging hairpins etc, turn descrim up just enough to break up the signal, and continue hunting, that way you can tell the little offenders from the solid stuff. HH Joe
