Frequency check question

therover

Well-known member
I tested my Infinium with both the stock DD and big mono ( which is lighter and better balanced so I am sticking with that one on the maiden voyage tomorrow) and everything is great. Hits all my test targets very well, including the deep quarter, corroded nickle and small, thin spark plug type ring I buried at 6 inches..hits that easy. All tone changes are what I expected , so the machine is running fine.

My question pertains to the frequency check procedure. When I turn the threshold knob all the way towards the frequency check position, the threshold sound gets louder until it hits that position. I can then barely hear anything when trying to use the discrimination knob to run through the frequencies. I have the ground balance on lock.

Is is supposed to be barely audible ? I know it's not the headphones because targets hit nice and loud...I just can't make out the sound of the machine and what it is doing while in the frequency adjust position. I can barely hear the little warbles and blips as I go through, and sometimes it gets a touch louder for a second at a certain position...but it this normal ? Maybe there isn't much EMI or noise out there and the machine is quiet.

Just want to know if this is SOP for the unit.

Thanks.

I figured that after I took it to a friends house that has some electrical wires running through the back yard. It was acting totally different at his house than mine, and I heard a bit more interference.

So....I guess in my backyard there isn't any EMI or interference, hence me not hearing anything at all.

Good to know all is well then. Just trying to learn. I read the manual and it stated the threshold would go lower, but I didn't expect to to be super quiet at first. Now I know if its nice and quiet, it's a good thing.

If your coils are the later type with the new round cable there will be very little audible sound when in frequency adjust, its a good sign and signifies the coil and cable shielding is working correctly.

Older coils with the flattened cable are prone to outside interferences to the point where most popular beaches were searched with severely reduced audio threshold.

My first impression of a new coil I imported myself from a reputable supplier to make sure it was a new type with round cable was as you described so quiet, I didn't think it was working,....... 4 beeps when switched on....... then nothing.......switched the unit off and try again...............4 beeps then nothing, moved the coil over a target, bingo Hi/Lo and quiet and again ........and again........it was sweet..........the way the Infinium LS should have sounded from the start when first introduced.

Some of the beaches I hunt may have EMI pulsing through the air waves. I hardly ever get effected by EMI since I mainly use my CZ's on the beach and they are pretty immune to it. I never had problems with my HH PI and Goldquest, so I don't expect issues with the Infinium either. It's good to know that the machine being that quiet in Freq Check mode at my house is a good thing. Like I stated in the previous post, it was acting up at my friends house, but I was about 35 feet away from many electrical wires running across the back of the yard through the neighborhood. The unit still worked, and had the high/lo when sweeping over a gold ring and the lo/high on a dime and you could hear it distinctively through the minor chatter.

Bottom line...I ain't worried and I think it will make an awesome beach unit if I put the time in. Glad it's waterproof.

It is said the Infinium LS can be worked close to even under power lines, I can only say don't try that at home with an early type coil.......... I've got 3 of those and they do not like it, but they work way out in the bush when gold prospecting, however I did not purchase a waterproof All Terrain unit for that purpose.

To shield a single frequency PI detector is one thing to shield a detector with 96 frequencies in every pulse would be a challenge.

I'll agree CZ work well on ocean beaches, better so if one is broad minded.

By the way not all gold is Hi/Lo

I am going to dig everything anyway, but I wanted everyone to know that the unit was working properly.

Shoot, I have dug low tone iron signals on my CZ that were gold so I know nothing is 100%. Too many variables.
