freq. Adjust in mineralised ground?

hi forum. I do a bit of detecting with the infinium here in wa austraLIA. i came across a guy who said he used the freq. Adjust sometimes in very mineralised ground eg ironstone, and found it very effective to get machine quiet. Has any one else been doing this and how does it affect the sensitivity of the machine? Just curious as i had not heard of this much. Waz

I don't live over there but when I encounter that problem, I set disc at 1 2 or 3 . By the time you get up to 3 it should run as smooth as a baby's butt. You won't lose much sensitivity to the small stuff either. If really bad ground run small DD coils. Should help. Changing freq should not affect anything but emi interference. Hope that helped some.

Changing the Pulse Frequency to quieten the Infinium in a noisy environment is the purpose of this adjustment, but changing the Pulse Frequency also changes the Audio Pitch not normally noticed as it is done slowly in small increments.

If we are in an area with little or no electrical disturbances there is no need for a frequency adjust, this where it become interesting as we can use the Pulse Frequency adjustment to change the Audio Pitch to better suit our specific hearing need/preference..........At "0" it's high pitch at 9+ it's low pitch.
The above work well with the supplied Garrett headphones be they Black or Blue.
Other brands of headphones can/will also change the audio pitch sometime dramatically, small ear buds are usually high pitched.

Changing the Pulse Frequency have little effect on detecting small gold pickers.............. but changing the Disc. above "0" Have!
I use or change the Audio Pitch to suit the location and conditions and ..........I have spent time with my Infinium LS in WA, at various locations.

There is more to the Infinium LS than what is written in the book's.

Hi Oldfart and Ivanll,

I am quite opposed to pushing up my discrimation to 2 or higher because I KNOW that I lose sensitivity to small gold by doing this. This is usually the case in highly mineralised ground like 95% ironstone or something similar.

So, Ivanll, your suggestion to only alter the PULSE FREQUENCY (or FREQ. ADJUST) seems preferable and the best option.

So if you were to encounter some noisy ground here in WA (eg noisy ironstone ground) would you try and use the frequency adjust/pulse frequency setting at the 0 (high pitch) or the 9+ pitch (low pitch). What would you recommend?

Also any suggestions what pitch setting to use to help with the smaller bits?

Bit of a novice hear but some really useful info I think needs more exploring on the forum!
Cheers Waz

Waz,

On the P2P forum before it got all re-done, I had posted what I call the Frequency Balance, I happened across this when I was working a heavy black sand beach in Maine.

I only used this in extreme circumstances.

OK so as I recall procedure is:

1) Turn on
2) Go to lock position and ground balance, if a quiet ground balance can't be obtained proceed to step 3 and balance after.
3) Turn Threshold knob starting at zero all the way to the freq. adj position and leave it for now.
4) Turn Discrimination knob starting at zero all the way to Iron Check and then back to zero.
5) Turn Threshold knob all the way back to zero, as you start get back to zero you hare a difference in threshold and right before you get back to zero the machine goes dead quiet.
6) No check your ground balance you should be quiet.

You can try different discrimination settings if you want, but using this I never had to adjust the frequency to a certain limit it just sort of balanced them out.

I had posted this procedure for others on the P2P forum and they responded with WOW! it worked.

Give it a try, if I posted this procedure correct it may just be the trick you need.

Good Luck

Davy!

thanks Davy

So with your frequency balance technique, what is it actually doing? Is it simply making the infinium do "automated frequency adjustment" ie. it finds its own quietest frequency?

If the frequency balance technique did not work on some really hot/mineralised ground, would you, as the next step, recommend doing a frequency adjustment manually ie. small turns to find a quiet frequency?

Im quite curious about the science behind why the frequency balance technique would help on hot ground.

Sounds quite exciting and cant wait to try it out.

Cheers!

Wazza,

When it comes to why or how it may work?? I have no idea, I just know it worked for me and others who tried it. I cant say it is a cure all and I certainly do not do this if it is not necessary, it has been a while since I have used it. Most of my hunts are in fresh water lakes and rivers.

All I know is you are in the freq adj mode and running through all the freq's maybe the process of running through them helps.

Give it a try, maybe it works for you maybe it wont, its worth a try.
