Not entirely free, you first need to buy the photo editing program that the plug ins will work with:

The Nik Collection has since grown from six to seven plug-ins. It includes Analog Efex Pro, Color Efex Pro, Silver Efex Pro, Viveza, HDR Efex Pro, Sharpener Pro, and Dfine, all of which work in Photoshop, Lightroom, and Aperture.

Windows:

Windows Vista®, Windows 7, Windows 8
Adobe Photoshop CS4 through CC 2015
Adobe Photoshop Elements 9 through 13 (apart from HDR Efex Pro 2, which is not compatible with Photoshop Elements)
Adobe Photoshop Lightroom 3 through 6/CC

Mac:

Mac® OS X 10.7.5 through 10.10
Adobe Photoshop CS4 (CS5 for HDR Efex Pro 2) through CC 2015
Adobe Photoshop Elements 9 through 13 (apart from HDR Efex Pro 2, which is not compatible with Photoshop Elements)
Adobe Photoshop Lightroom 3 through 6/CC
Apple® Aperture® 3.1 or later

GPU Compatibility:

NVIDIA GeForce 8 Series, GeForce 9 Series, GeForce 100 Series, GeForce 200 Series, GeForce 300 Series, GeForce 400 Series, GeForce 500 Series, ATI Radeon HD2000 Series, Radeon HD3000 Series, Radeon HD4000 Series, Radeon HD5000 Series, Radeon HD6000 Series.

If no compatible card is available, GPU acceleration will be disabled and the CPU will be used.

you can actually use them as stand alone apps.. it just doesn't associate them with one of the other programs...
(on a MAC) if you right click on the photo and click on "open with" then go to the plug-in you want to use it works fine.. not sure about a windows machine.

Tried it in Win 7 in VirtualBox, installed, no apps for picture to be opened it.
I have Elements 2, won't work with it.

Oh well, I have enough other photo editing programs that cover what I need.........

Hi Sven.
Using Win7 here also. When I downloaded the WIN version and installed it
it also installed a .exe - file into every folder.
This .exe allows to load images, edit them and then save them.

Happy Easter!

thanks for the info Vito.... sorry I had no idea how it would work with windows, i don't have a machine to experiment on.....
thanks
frank

Found the folders in the Virtualbox C drive and clicked on the exe, yes they open up and work.
But Virtual Windows doesn't have enough power to drive them.
I actually have a second drive now in my computer for Windows 7, normally run Linux Mint on drive 1.
Next time I boot into Win 7, will install the apps and see how they go.
