This is what a friend of mine in New York (nope not Joe) wrote me:

No charge for directory assistance

Phone companies are charging us $1.00 or more for 411 / information calls when they don't have to.

When you need to use the 411 / information option, simply dial
1-800-FREE-411 or 1 800 373 3411 without incurring a charge.

This is information people don't mind receiving - Pass it on.

Works on cell phone also.

I haven't used this service - mainly because of the charges to the phone bill. Haven't checked this out on snopes.com myself but being an 800 number maybe there is some validity to this. Going to add it to my cell phone - since if I will be using it it would probably be on the road when I need the info and no phone book or other source readily available.

Another tip: For addresses on the road and you're looking for a house or company and don't know where it is - find the fire station. They have a huge map on the wall and can tell you how to get to where you want to be - that's how they get to the fires faster - by using the map on the wall for directions.
