found this on old trail

hay there, i was searching a section along an old trail that was built in the 1870's and found this around 5 or 6 inches deep with my Garrett Scorpion. Have no clue what it is??? its 2 inches wide and 4 inches long and someone hand ingraved "B17" on the top. Does anyone know what this is? thanks

It's hard to tell with that picture but the first one reminds me of anvils we used to make out of railroad track. I still have one and it works great.

The old trail that I found this on is fairly close to the railway tracks and I know that this railway was built in 1912. If its a track anvil, how does it work and do you know how old it is? thanks

I have one I made from an overhead crane rail track, same as regular railroad track. I have another that I got with some old tools, it is smaller and looks like narrow gauge track. I really don't know the dimensions of different tracks. See if you can get a clearer picture.

hi there awhitster, id love to get a better picture of it but my camera is crap and thats the best it will get. Im a 15 minute drive away from a railway museum so ill see if anyone there might have any clue to what it is. As for a railway anvil, just by looking at it I can tell you it will not fit on the train tracks but mabey the older train tracks were smaller, not sure?
