Found this large sleigh bell today

near a river in a pre Rev war town. Used the ID Edge with 10" coil. Bell was about 9" deep. Detector said "deep non-ferrous" so I had to check it out. Also found 2 wheats, some bullets and a giant horseshoe that looked like it fell off a Clydesdale. Found these bells before but none were this big. Used the 10" coil for the first time, a little heavy but manageable. Was good to finally get out, the bell made my day.

Nice bell way to go. Does it still have the ringer inside?
HH

Still has the metal ball inside, nice tone. Has VII stamped into it, might be a size number.

Oops, Looked again, VIII stamped on it.

Went back today to where I found the bell. Found a 1916 Barber dime maybe 6" deep, a 1937 Merc maybe 6" deep and a Memorial penny. Used my small shovel, don't really know how deep they were. But I was quite sure they were silver by the tone and by lifting the coil to get a size of the target. Area is wooded with a lot of nasty thorn bushes, but will go back.

Number 7 "crotal bell." Awesome find if you ask me. I have 2 smaller ones, and would love to find one like that.
They are quite old, here is a good site about them. will help you date it

Rick, thanks for the site, lots of info there. I always wondered how they got the ball inside, now I know. My bell has no initials anywhere, just VIII at the top and the sunflower design on the bottom. Don't know if it came from Europe or was made in U.S., but info on the website seems to say made in 1700's or 1800's. Thanks again, Dave

1790 - 1820 becvause the older ones have a tendency to have little or no design on them. Nice find. PEACE:RONB

keep track of live stock such as cows or sheep. They were tied around the animals neck and when the animal walked the bell would rattle so the farmer or rancher etc. could know where the animals were ok. A nice Crotal Bell in good shape sell for $ 10.00 - $ 75.00 ok. I hope this helps. PEACE:RONB
