I think that those best friends aren't best friends anymore as evidenced by the fact that the chain came out with it and wasnt broken - it was carefully unfastened. Friendship is so fragile at that age.

Nice find and chains depending on their makeup can become unclasped playing-roughhousing etc. on their own and perhaps they are still friends but one just doesn't have a necklace anymore...
