Found these 2 buttons about 20 feet apart...

Now, I'm no Civil War expert, but isn't the first button Confederate and the second button Union? Found them hunting an old plantation site in NC. No battles were recorded here, however, there was a lot of troop activity in this area.

Yes you are correct. Nice Confederate cast Block I and a US Eagle I (Infantry) button. Could well have been both worn by the same soldier from either side? Nice finds. CCH

Very nice finds, I had the same thing happen to me last two times out. I found a block A button & a New York staff officers button about twenty feet apart. I agree with cch I think from the finds I have found that the Confederate troops used what they could. I also think a good camping spot was used over & over by the troops both sides. I found a Virginia officers coat button at a Federal head quarters this spring. I know no Confederates camped there. Souvenirs who knows. Any way HH TIM

While searching around an old home site last year, my buddy and I found a variety of civil war buttons that included, script "A" buttons, block" I" and script" I"buttons, a Pennsylvania button, a Virginia state seal button, and an eagle button.
Like the others stated, most were worn by the sam person in the process of replacing what he may have lost, and didn't care what kind of button it was.
You got some good ones there!! congradulations.. there may be some more at that site!!!
